The Berkshire Museum hosts a FREE lecture with guest speaker, Dr. Bruce Bridges, on Matthew Henson, who was indispensable to Peary’s legendary 1909 North Pole expedition team. Dr. Bridges examines Henson’s and other African American contributions to exploration. Dr. Bruce Bridges is one of the most dynamic young speakers of our time, and is recognized as an expert in the fields of history, geo-politics and multi-cultural systems. He is the author of The Ghetto Mind,The Roots of Geography, and Recapturing the African Mind.

Classes in acting for kids and playwriting for everyone starts this week at Barrington Stage. KidsAct! is an acclaimed theatre program designed to awaken the creativity of children ages 8 to 15. Madeleine Kunin, former Vermont governor and Pittsfield High School alumnus, returns to Pittsfield for International Women's Day 2009 to sign copies of her new book, Pearls, Politics and Power, and give a talk on women and politics sponsored by WHEN.There will be a special reception for her followed by a lecture at Congregation Knesset Israel. Tickets for the reception are limited, and reservations requested. Madeleine Kunin was the first woman to be elected governor of a state three consecutive terms and was the first female Jewish governor in U.S. history. She later served as U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland, and in the Clinton Administration as a deputy secretary of education.
