WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The painting Bacchante by Marie Louise Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, who enjoyed celebrity as one of the most successful portrait painters of her era, will be the subject of the Thursday, March 12, Looking at Lunchtime Talk at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. Danielle Steinmann, assistant curator of education, will present the 12:30 pm gallery talk. Admission is free.

French painter Marie Louise Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun (1755-1842) earned an international reputation for her stylish portrayals of royalty and aristocratic society in France and throughout Europe. Before the outbreak of the French Revolution she was closely associated with Marie-Antoinette and the taste of the Ancien Régime. After 1789, Vigée-Lebrun continued her highly lucrative career abroad. Steinmann will discuss the artist and her intriguing 1785 oil painting Bacchante.

The series continues on Thursday, April 9, when Richard Rand, senior curator and curator of paintings and sculpture, examines Portrait of a Man by Agnolo Bronzino. The talks take place at 12:30 pm on the second Thursday of every month. Attendees may purchase food from the courtyard café or bring a bag lunch to enjoy before or after the gallery talk.

The Clark is celebrating the achievements of women artists during the Berkshires-wide recognition of International Women's Day and its 2009 theme, "The Power of Women in the Arts." Thirteen prints, drawings, and photographs created by women are featured in the exhibition Women's Work, on view through April 19. Take this special opportunity to see works by Mary StevensonCassatt, Julia Margaret Cameron, Käthe Kollwitz, Doris Ulmann, Alice Burr, Anna Atkins, Berenice Abbott, and Berthe Morisot. In addition, associate curator of European art Sarah Lees will broach the question "Have There Really Been No Great Women Artists?" on March 25, bringing feminist art historical criticism into the present day.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, MA. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (open daily in July and August). Admission is free November through May. Admission June 1 through October 31 is $12.50 for adults, free for children 18 and under, members, and students with valid ID. For more information, call 413-458-2303 or visit clarkart.edu.
