Pathways: A Journal of Literature & Art available now

What makes the Berkshire Writers Room's Pathways magazine so special this year? It's that for the first time in a very long time (since the early Berkshire Reviews) this is a truly Berkshire artists' magazine. All of the featured writers, artists and photographers have ties to the Berkshires. Most live here. The second very special feature is that there are several pieces by young people, from ages 10-15.

The covers this year are by Owen Weber and Wayne Donelan.

Owen Weber- (front cover) Owen Weber lives in Astoria, NY but was born and raised in Pittsfield. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 2002, enrolled in the Hartford Art Scholl and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2006 with a major in Illustration and a minor in Art History. Currently he works as an illustrator.

Wayne Donelan- (back cover) Since moving to Lenox four years ago, and retiring, Donelan elected to drive his 1928 truck (provided it was above 32 degrees). He wanted to avoid being in a hurry and wanted to explore his new surroundings in a different way. Donelan collected paintings and always admired the way they made him look at a subject and the SPIRIT. A few months ago he put paint to canvas. The process of painting forced him to SEE. What better place to get vision then The Berkshires!

Also included are photographs by Henry Dondi, Eric Koprenman and Steven F. Dansky. Stories and poems by William Miller, Laura Gross, Matt McFadden, Donna Vigiard and Victoria Passier of the "The Three Poets."

Each copy is $7.50 plus $1.00/s&h and can be ordered by writing The Berkshire Writers Room at 1350 West Street, Pittsfield, MA 01021. For questions about our organization you can email us at bwr.smack@gmail.com or calling 413-281-7364. The BWR has monthly meetings for writers of every genre. Call or email for further information.

Striking Out Cancer in Berkshires Holds Sunday Party Before June 27 Games

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires.com Sports
PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Striking out Cancer in the Berkshires has been bringing smiles for half a decade.

This year, it also is bringing Smiley.

A day of community baseball and softball games that act as a fund-raiser for the Jimmy Fund is the brainchild of Joe DiCicco, who has expanded the event’s footprint over the years and seen a steady growth in money raised as a result.

This year’s games are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on June 27 on Buddy Pellerin Field at Clapp Park.

But the festivities begin this Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sideline Saloon on Fenn Street, where DiCicco invites families to come down, free of charge, to take photos with a Boston Red Sox World Series Trophy and meet Boston mascot Wally the Green Monster and Smiley, the mascot of the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox.

“It’s just a little way to give back to the community to start the week,” DiCicco said. “Last year, we had the trophy for the first time, and they want to bring it back, so that’s a good thing. Wally is different, and so is Smiley.”

What has not changed is DiCicco’s dedication to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund, inspired by Einar Gustafson, a child who beat cancer with the help of Dr. Sidney Farber in 1948 and shared his story with the world under the name Jimmy to protect his anonymity.
