WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – In a cold and blustery game, Ephs women’s lacrosse (1-1, 0-1 NESCAC) beat MIT (0-2) 17-6.  Ephs offense was relentless with, seniors Julia Nawrocki and Brit Spackman, juniors Tina Nawrocki and Whitney Thayer, and freshman Taylor Fleishhacker all scoring hat tricks.

Williams started strong with Spackman and both Nawrocki's scoring before MIT put a point on the board with a goal from Lynne Tye at 20:02. After unsuccessful settled attack from both sides, Williams’ Fleishhacker broke through the MIT defense twice in a row to bring the score to 5-1. Both teams were successful in the last 10 minutes of the first half. Ephs’ Thayer, Julia Nawrocki, Tina Nawrocki, Spackman and Fleishhacker all scored, and both Tye and Erica Little found the net for MIT. The half finished with Williams up 10-3.

MIT took advantage of a yellow card that left the Ephs down a man to start the second half. They scored two goals before the card expired. Ephs answered back with goals from junior Quinn Sanborne-Bruggemann and Julia Nawrocki. Casey Flynn scored MIT’s last goal of the game at 23:49. However, Williams offense was not finished. Thayer, Spackman, and Tina Nawrocki rounded out their hat tricks, and freshman Margie Fulton put one on the board for the Ephs to win the game with a score of 17-6.

Ephs head coach Chris Mason was pleased with her teams play. She said, “I was really happy with how we moved the ball today, and our defense played well.” In addition to the Ephs’ strong offense, freshman Meera Sivalingam played particularly well for Williams on defense. Sophomore goalie Julia Schreiber made 6 saves for the Ephs while MIT keeper Molly McCartin stopped 12.

Ephs next game is away against NESCAC opponent Bates College this Saturday, March 12, at noon.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
