Two Opportunities for Young Theater Artists

Are you an aspire young theater artist looking to gain experience in the field of performing arts?  Do you know a young person looking for a great opportunity to further develop their craft this July and August?

Then you need to check out the two unique, hands-on programs The Berkshire Fringe offers to college-aged theater artists every year: The EarlyStages Playwright Mentorship Program and The Berkshire Fringe Internship Program.

EarlyStages Playwright Mentorship Program

EarlyStages is a a two-week residency for emerging local writers ages 18-26. Participants focus intensively on developing a play under the mentorship of a skilled professional playwright with extensive teaching artist experience.

In the third year of this unique program, three talented young writers will be chosen from an open application process.

The program is tailored to address the objectives of each participant. Every other day the playwrights will attend a workshop lead by the mentor. Alternating days will be reserved for writing/developing the scripts.

Each participating writer will have three rehearsals with actors and a professional director to prepare for a reading which will take place as a free event at The Berkshire Fringe.

Susan Kim will be the 2009 Playwright Mentor.  Ms. Kim is best know for her internationally produced stage adaptation of Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. She currently teaches in the MFA program at Goddard College.

The deadline for submission is April 1, 2009.

Visit our website for an application, information about the program, and Susan Kim's bio.

The Berkshire Fringe Internship Program

For three and a half weeks during July and August, a select group of young talented theater artists will be chosen for The Berkshire Fringe Internship Program.

Because our organization is small, our interns are an integral part of making The Berkshire Fringe happen. They work hands-on with all staff, including the Artistic Directors and Technical Director.

Berkshire Fringe interns are intensely involved at the highest level behind the scenes and work directly with the professional actors, musicians, directors, technicians, designers, administrators and other diverse theater professionals at the festival.

Performance and Technical Theater concentrations give our interns experience in the areas they are most interested in. Performers participate in professionally directed staged readings of brand new plays in the EarlyStages program, and will mentor with one of the Artistic Directors. Technical interns work side-by-side with our tech staff all summer.

Application are accepted on a rolling deadline basis.  Please submit your application as soon as possible.  Applications will only be considered if there are still available spots in the program.
