WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Despite a second half rally, Ephs women’s lacrosse (6-3, 3-3 NESCAC) went down to archrival Amherst (5-3, 3-2 NESCAC) with a final score of 8-7. The Ephs dominated the second half 4-1, but it was not enough to overcome the first half deficit.

The Lord Jeff's had a strong start, scoring three goals before Williams senior Julia Nawrocki scored an unassisted goal at 16:04. However, Amherst responded quickly with a goal from Amy Craig less than a minute later.

Ephs freshman Margie Fulton scored on a free position shot at 12:23, but Amherst continued to dominate the half. The Lord Jeffs found the net three more times before the half was out while Fulton put another point on the board for the Ephs. The half ended with a 7-3 advantage to Amherst.

After the half, Williams came out with more fire, more accurate shooting, and stronger defense. Fulton, senior Britt Spackman, and junior Anne Marie Burke all scored before Amherst’s Craig put one in the net for the Lord Jeffs at 8:53.

Williams continued to play hard until the end. Spackman scored again with 4:11 remaining, but it was not enough and the game ended 8-7 with Amherst on top.

Sophomore goaltender Julia Schreiber played the full 60 minutes for the Ephs, making 4 saves, while Amherst’s Lamia Harik turned 14 shots aside.

Ephs head coach Chris Mason was disappointed with her team’s first half, but was pleased with the improved intensity in the second half: “We did not play hard enough and left Schreiber out to dry in the first half, but the younger players provided a spark that got us going at the beginning of the second half.”

Mason noted that freshmen Katie Ellis, Margie Fulton, and Taylor Fleishhacker, and sophomore Ali Page were particularly important to the team’s turnaround.

The Ephs next travel to Maine to play NESCAC rival Bowdion at 12:00pm on April 11th.

Williamstown Elementary Principal Making Plans to Use New Math Position

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williamstown Elementary School's principal last week told the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee that the best use of an additional $120,000 in the fiscal year 2027 budget is to hire a math interventionist for the school.

Benjamin Torres on Wednesday gave the board an update on the school with a focus on the need to address instruction in mathematics.

Those concerns prompted a request from the WES School Council to include the full-time math interventionist position in the FY27 budget.

School councils are committees of staff and community members in each building of a regional school district that are charged with assessing and advocating for the needs of individual schools.

Although funding for the position was not included in what district administrators characterized as a "level services" budget that it sent to both member towns, some Williamstown parents took their case directly to town meeting, which voted to amend the town's assessment to the district, adding the additional $120,000 to cover salary and benefits for new position.

Torres last week reminded the School Committee of the arguments he made for an interventionist when he presented the School Council's report back in February.

"My goal is to highlight the amazing growth we've seen with our students and the amazing work being done by our teachers, but also highlight there's a small group of students who are not closing the gaps quickly enough to be prepared to be successful at the upcoming grade level," Torres said. "This is why the School Council has been advocating not just for an interventionist but for a more systematic approach when it comes to interventions."
