Paul Hoilman and Kevin Hempstead Receive RecognitionBy Rick Zmudzien 09:41AM / Wednesday, April 29, 2009
Congratulations to Eastern Tennessee State sophomore first baseman Paul Hoilman, who was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week on Monday. Hoilman, who was a NECBL All-Star in 2008, will be returning to North Adams to once again play for the SteepleCats. Hoilman led the way for the ETSU Buccaneers this past week who won five games and extended their winning streak to a program record nine games. Hoilman hit a scorching .682 over the five-game stretch, going 15-for-22 with seven doubles, a home run, ten runs scored and eight RBI. Hoilman’s slugging percentage for the week was an amazing 1.136, and his on-base percentage was .750. With the hot week, Hoilman raised his season batting average from .331 to .379. Hoilman also has eight home runs and 47 RBI on the season. The Buccaneers are now 23-19 on the season, with a record of 9-12 in Atlantic Sun games. One thing that has remained consistent during the SteepleCats eight years of operation is the voice of the SteepleCats, Kevin Hempstead. On Sunday, May 3, Hempstead will serve as the public address announcer at Wahconah Park for the Amherst versus Williams game celebrating the 150th anniversary of collegiate baseball. The game will be shown on ESPNU on Monday and will aired lived on ESPN360.com. Hempstead was asked by former the 2007 SteepleCats Assistant Coach, Brian Hamm, who remembered Hempstead doing a great job with the SteepleCats. Hamm is currently an assistant at Amherst College, but has been named the Interim Head Coach at Amherst for the 2010 season. Hempstead has volunteers as the Public Address Announcer at Joe Wolfe Field for the SteepleCats home games and has announced over 170 baseball games for the SteepleCats and several other tournaments, including Babe Ruth tournaments and the annual LaFesta Baseball Exchange. “Volunteers are a major reason the SteepleCats are able to be successful each summer and bring 20,000 fans to Joe Wolfe Field. Kevin has been with the organization longer than most people, including me, and shows up every night and does a professional job announcing the game. I know Kevin is looking forward to this game and will do an excellent job for the two schools,” said McGrath. Opening Day is right around the corner. The SteepleCats will open up their season on Friday, June 5, in New Hampshire to take on the Keene Swamp Bats. The SteepleCats play their home opener on Saturday, June 6 against the Danbury Westerners. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Joe Wolfe Field, and the gates will open at 6:00 p.m. For more information on the roster, schedule and other news, please visit www.steeplecats.com. |
