MCLA offering 3 science day camps in North Adams and Pittsfield10:23AM / Thursday, May 21, 2009
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Continuing Education Department at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), in collaboration with the Berkshire STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Pipeline Network, is accepting applications for three summer day camps for children ages 9 to 14.
The camps are designed for girls and boys with interests in science and robotics.
“Robotics Fun Camp” will take place July 27–31 at MCLA. “Robotics Camp 2” runs Aug. 3-7 at the Intermodal Education Center in Pittsfield, and “Summer Science Camp” will be held Aug. 10 - Sept. 1 at MCLA.
Robotics Fun Camp and Robotics Camp 2 are designed to allow campers to work individually, in teams and in groups as they each build a LEGO™ MindStorms robot. Instructors will provide individual assistance and instruction and facilitate challenges, performance testing and modifications to projects.~In addition, campers will be introduced to some new robotic devices as they build small robots from kits.
No familiarity with LEGO™ MindStorms is needed; this course is designed for beginners and experienced robot builders.
At Summer Science Camp, daily activities include science experiments, creative games and the development of critical thinking. Activities include field trips to MCLA’s biology, chemistry and physics labs, a visit to “outer space” in the Starlab inflatable planetarium, as well as games and arts projects.
Participants of both camps will be required to bring their own lunch and snack. The cost is $350 per student for each camp. Campers may be dropped off between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and picked up between 4:30 and 5 p.m.
Both camps are sponsored by MCLA in collaboration with the Berkshire STEM Pipeline Network. For more information, contact Melissa James at 413-662-5543, or go to http://www.mcla.edu/About_MCLA/mclasummercamps. |
