McCann Names Top Students for Class of 2009

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — McCann Technical School has named this year's valedictorian and salutatorian of the graduating class.

Alexander L. Segala, son of Mr. and  Mrs. Neil Segala of 84 Bradley St., has been named valedictorian and Hannah K. Nuvallie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Nuvallie of 155 Middle Road, Clarksburg, is salutatorian, according to Principal Kathleen Millard.

Segala is a senior in the machine technology program. He is a recipient of the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship, the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendent's Award for Academic Excellence and the Outstanding Vocational Technical Student Award.

During his time at McCann, he was a gold medalist at both the 2007 and 2008 SkillsUSA State and National competitions. This year, Segala once again won a gold medal in "Mechatronics" at the state level and will be advancing to the national level in June in Kansas City, Mo.

In addition to his myriad academic achievements, Alex has been a four-year student of the pre-engineering program Project Lead The Way, president of the school's SkillsUSA chapter, a member of the National Honor Society and of the School Council, a Boys' State delegate, and has represented his shop on his program's Advisory Board. 

Segala will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall, majoring in engineering.

Nuvallie, a senior in the culinary arts program, is also a recipient of the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship as well as being honored with the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award.

A culinary arts gold medal winner at the SkillsUSA District competition, she advanced to the state level and was awarded a silver medal. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been a student participant in the Cooperative Education program in both her junior and senior years. In addition, she is a School Council member, student representative for the Culinary Arts Advisory Board and a SkillsUSA member.

Segala will attend Bay Path College in the fall.

Both students will graduate with high honors on June 11, 2009.

Mystic, Conn., Rolls Past SteepleCats

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Camden Righi went 3-for-5 with a double Tuesday to lead the Mystic Schooners (5-1) to a 12-2 win over the North Adams SteepleCats in New England Collegiate Baseball action at Joe Wolfe Field.
 
Parker Camelo was 2-for-3 at the plate for North Adams, which scored both its runs in the bottom of the ninth.
 
North Adams used six pitchers in the loss. James Morr and Joe LaPrade each provided an inning of no-hit relief.
 
The SteepleCats (0-3) are at Martha's Vineyard on Wednesday night.
