David Haley made two nice stops at third base, and Matt Burdick came up big behind the plate, throwing out two runners, blocking the plate to prevent a run and jumping out to grab a pop-up to end a threat with two runners on base.

Matt Koperniak pitched a complete game 2-hitter as Val’s Variety defeated Police 2-1 in a semifinal thriller to advance to the finals of the Adams Little League playoffs. Koperniak, who notched 7 strikeouts in the victory, also helped his own cause in fielding his position. With runners on second and third with two outs in the 6th and the score knotted at 1-1, he fielded a slow roller off the bat of Jake Tower and fired a strike to first base, retiring Tower by half a step. The game was a classic pitchers’ duel as Police starter Chris Gajda was equally effective, as he too allowed only two hits. Gajda however reached his pitch count in the 5th inning and left with a 1-0 lead. Val’s then loaded the bases on a walk and a pair of errors and with one out Eli Masse hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Koperniak with the tying run. It remained that way until the bottom of the 6th when Jake Daigneault drew a one-out walk. Matt Waltermire followed with a single, putting runners on first and second. David Haley then lined a single up the middle, plating Jake Daigneault with the winning run.  Daigneault made it interesting however, as he initially missed third base and had to go back to tag the base before continuing home ahead of the throw. Val’s manage only 4 hits in the game – 2 apiece from David Haley and Matt Waltermire, but once again, as has been the case for most of the year, the defense kept them in the game. Koperniak made several good plays from the mound as did Waltermire at shortstop, Nate Tomkiewicz at first base and Eli Masse at second.

By Sabrina DammsiBerkshires Staff

Moderator Carol Francesconi, left, and Anne Marie Furey were presented flowers in memory of the Rev. William Furey, their brother and husband, respectively. The town report was dedicated to him.
CHESHIRE, Mass. — Town meeting on Monday approved all 35 articles on the annual meeting warrant, including a total spending for fiscal 2027 of more than $8.5 million.

Some 77 of the town's more than 2,500 registered voters filled the Cheshire Community House meeting room, debating on a number of articles during the meeting that lasted nearly three hours

The town dedicated its annual report to the Rev. William David Furey, longtime pastor of First Baptist Church and more recently Berkshire Union Chapel in Lanesborough. Furey died last year at age 77.

His wife, Anne Marie Furey, and his sister, Town Moderator Carol Francesconi, were presented with a bouquet of flowers in tribute to him.

He was an exemplary member of the community who left a lasting impression in each and every life that he touched, said Town Clerk Whitney Flynn.

Voters approved several warrant articles that make up an operating budget of $3,840,314 for fiscal 2027. Of this amount, $1,642,481 is allocated for the general government budget, which was approved after clarification of a few questions.

One item was the administrative assistant's salary. Prior to the annual meeting, the town eliminated the executive assistant salary of $54,309 in favor of a part-time administrative assistant salary of $27,155, to reduce costs considering the financial constraint the town is in.
