Danielle Steinmann will make a visual presentation on “Toulouse-Lautrec and the Celebrities of Monmartre”09:16AM / Tuesday, June 30, 2009
LENOX, Mass. - Museum educator and art historian Danielle Steinmann will make a visual presentation on “Toulouse-Lautrec and the Celebrities of Monmartre” as part of Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum’s 2009 Summer Lecture Series on Wednesday, July 22, at 4:00pm. A Victorian Tea will follow the program.
The speaker will show, as seen through the eyes of the artists who lived there, the development of Monmartre as the center of avent-garde culture in late 19th century Paris. Such popular nightclubs and cabarets as the Moulin Rouge and the entertainers that they made famous will be viewed and discussed. The primary focus will be Impressionist artist Toulouse-Lautrec and celebrities like Jan Avril and Yvette Guilbert who he promoted as subjects of his posters.
Until recently, Steinmann was Assistant Curator of Education at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. A version of her lecture was presented to Clark members during the museum’s recent showing of the “Toulouse-Lautrec and Paris” exhibition. Her talk at Ventfort Hall is being given in conjunction with its summer theater production “Paris 1890 – Unlaced!”
At the Clark, Steinmann was responsible for the operation and development of the education program, including docent training, teacher professional development, lectures, gallery talks and special events. Prior to the Clark, she was Program Coordinator in the education department at the Massachusetts Cultural Council. She has also served as an adjunct faculty member in art history at Bennington College and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
Tickets for the lecture and tea are $15 per person for nonmembers and $12 for members. For reservations call Ventfort Hall at 413-637-3206. The historical mansion is located at 104 Walker Street in Lenox.
An Official Project of Save America’s Treasures, Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum offers tours of the historic mansion, as well as lectures, concerts, teas, theater and other programs. This elegant Elizabethan-Revival Berkshire “cottage,” listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is open to the public year-around and is available for private rental. Built in 1893 for George and Sarah Morgan (sister of the financier, J. P. Morgan), Ventfort Hall has undergone substantial restoration, which continues. |
