Ventfort Receives$45K Grant for Carriage House Restoration02:39PM / Tuesday, July 21, 2009
LENOX - Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum has received a matching grant of $45,000 from the Massachusetts Historical Commission's Preservation Projects Fund. The grant is for restoration and repair work needed to protect the historic Lenox property's Carriage House. A dollar-for-dollar match from earlier funds provided by the Manton Foundation will increase the project total to $90,000.
Paul Holtz, co-director of the Preservation Projects Fund, will meet on July 23 with Robert Harrison and Patrick Lindgay of Harrison Design Associates, architects for the project; Kristine Sprague, chairman of Ventfort Hall's board of directors and an architect; Jeffrey Folmer, executive director; Steven Baum, Ventfort Hall’s construction manager, and Tjasa Sprague, project coordinator and board member. The group will finalize the actual work that can be accomplished with the allocated funds.
Much work, exterior masonry, shoring and repair of the interior structure, and the replication of gable tiles took place in 2000 before work came to a halt when funds were curtailed due to the economic downturn. In 1999, over $200,000 was spent repairing the foundation, the interior trusses and one of the gables.
Today, Ventfort Hall is an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The mansion has undergone numerous restorations over the past 12 years. Since 2000, portions of the mansion have been open to the public for tours and events. With the help of the Manton Foundation grants, this year the master bedrooms on the second floor are open for the first time with the display of Something Old, Something New: 200 Years of Berkshire Brides, in collaboration with the Berkshire Historical Society.
