Pittsfield Defenders Swept by Keene Swamp Bats

By Michael Radomski
Pittsfield American Defenders
11:19PM / Saturday, July 25, 2009

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Keene Swamp Bats (23-12) received an early lead in a suspended game, and steady offense in the nightcap for two wins over the Pittsfield American Defenders (13-19) on Saturday night.

Both teams were suspended on July 7 at Alumni Field when heavy rains stopped play with Keene ahead 7-0. The Swamp Bats hung on for an 8-3 win over the American Defenders in the afternoon and then earned the sweep with a 14-6 decision at night.

In game one, Keene pitcher Nick Cenatiempo (St. John's Univ) took over for Adam Conley (Washington State) when play continued in the top of the fifth inning. Conley kept Pittsfield scoreless through 4 2/3 innings, allowing just four hits and four walks. Cenatiempo walked Corey Lytle (Univ of Washington) and then got out of the inning without allowing a run.

With a doubleheader on Saturday and three more during the week, Pittsfield brought in shortstop Virgil Chavira (Azusa Pacific Univ) to pitch and rest the bullpen. Chavira kept Pittsfield in the game by throwing the next four innings while only allowing a run.

Pittsfield started to cut into the deficit in the top of the sixth inning when Beau Zinman (UNC Asheville) doubled to start the inning and Jimmy Waters (Univ of Kansas) followed with another double to make the score 7-1. Zinman then added an RBI single in the 7th inning to bring Pittsfield within another run. Cenatiempo retired Jimmy Waters on a flyout to end the inning, and was able to strand two American Defenders on base.

Both teams would add another run later in the game as Nick Cenatiempo finished by pitching the final 4 1/3 innings. Cenatiempo earned his first win of the season as Keene improved to 24-12 this summer. Ryan Terry (Monmouth Univ) went 3 for 4 in the Swamp Bats win with 2 RBIs.

Pittsfield's Corey Davisson (Univ of Evansville) took the loss in the first game. The pitcher started the game on July 7th by allowing seven runs (5 earned) in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Davisson falls to 1-4 on the season, as the game moved Pittsfield to 13-20.

After a half hour break, both teams stepped back onto the field at Wahconah Park and prepared for another nine innings of baseball. Eric Binder (Trinity) started for Pittsfield and Matt Zielinski (Richmond Univ) was on the hill for Keene.

Both starters were unable to get past the third inning in the nightcap. Zielinski pitched just two-thirds of an inning as the Pittsfield right-hander lasted just two innings.

Keene took the early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning against Binder. The first run scored on a groundout from former Pittsfield outfielder Chris Edmondson (Le Moyne Coll) and designated hitter Nick Pulsonetti (Monmouth Univ) brought the other two home on a double to left field.

Pittsfield quickly took the lead back in the bottom of the inning against the Keene left-handed starter. The inning started with a fielding error as the American Defenders sent all nine hitters to the plate. Casey Lytle and Zach Williams (Judson Univ) both had RBI singles and Brian Meagher (La Salle Univ) gave Pittsfield the lead with a two-run single to right field. Zielinski was then taken out for Kyle McMyne (Villanova Univ) who ended the inning.

With the 4-3 lead, Eric Binder hit two batters and walked two more as Keene looked to regain the lead. The pitcher then retired Ryan Terry on a fielder’s choice to end the inning. McMyne kept the deficit at a run as he pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings for the Swamp Bats.

Keene struck again in the third inning against three different Pittsfield pitchers. Eric Binder started by walking each of the first three hitters he faced before being taken out of the game. Reliever Carter Butland (Bowdoin Coll) then came in to a ground ball out, but allowed an RBI single to Tim Hayes (Univ of Louisville) that put Keene ahead 5-4. Pittsfield manager Dr. Carroll Land then made an injury visit to the mound and removed Butland from the game. Pittsfield used three different position players to pitch the rest of the game.

Shortstop Zach Williams pitched three innings in relief and was also able to pick up three strikeouts in the process. He allowed just 2 runs (1 earned) in his first appearance of the season.

Infielder Brian Meagher also pitched but only retired one hitter on Saturday night. First baseman John Andreoli (UCONN) closed out the game for Pittsfield as he threw the last 3 1/3 innings, saving the bullpen for tomorrow's game.

Keene batted around in the sixth inning with a two-run double from Tim Hayes. The Swamp Bats catcher went 2 for 4 with four runs batted in. Keene added another run in the top of the seventh and used four different relievers to finish out the 14-6 win.

The Swamp Bats stay in first place in the Western Division as Keene moves to 25-12. They will travel tomorrow to play at the North Shore Navigators (19-17). First pitch is scheduled for 7 o'clock.

With the loss, Pittsfield’s record stands at 13-21 where the American Defenders are now 3 1/2 games out of a playoff spot. Pittsfield is back in action tomorrow as the American Defenders host the visiting North Adams SteepleCats in the final matchup in the 2009 Battle of the Berkshires. The Sunday game will start at five o’clock at Wahconah Park.
