Berkshire Music School Offers Cabaret Master Class, Workshops04:15PM / Friday, July 31, 2009
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Music School is offering a caberet master class on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 14 and 15, from 10 to 4.
Voice instructor Sherri James Buxton will lead an in-depth study of interpretation and improvisation for singers with performance experience. Singers will work with her and arranger Bob Shepherd on their individual performances as they examine lyrics and specific moments and changes within the story in the process of making the song their own. They also will explore jazz improvisation and work with a piano and bass combo.
Buxton has sung professionally since the age of 17, performing on and off Broadway, at nightclubs and caberets and at a number of local venues, including the Colonial theater. Shepherd has had a lifetime of experience in solo, small jazz groups and big band formats and is a first-call vocal accompanist in western New England.
The workshop is limited to six participants, and the fee is $250.
The fall adult cabaret workshops will be offered each Monday for 10 weeks beginning Oct. 5. Levels I and II are designed for new students, and will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The fee is $300, with a limit of 10 students. The Level III class, held from 7:45 to 9:30 p.m., requires completion of Levels I and II, and the passing of a vocal audition. The fee is $350, with a limit of eight students.
