WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Williams Men’s Golf team came out firing today, as they completed their first round atop the Leaderboard, with the Williams “B” team lurking close behind in 5th place.

Jack Killea 2011 , and Chris Valle 2012 both shot impressive rounds of even par 70 today. First-year Wyatt Sparks followed suit with a 73 in his first competitive round as an Eph. Juniors Bob Camp 2011 and Jake Wagner 2011 anchored the scoring with 75’s of their own to contribute to a tally of 288 for the Williams “A” team.

The Williams “B” squad also had a strong showing out on the course today, as first-year Jack Ervasti put up an impressive even par round of 70. Drew Murray 2011  bounced back from last week’s tough start with a strong 73 of his own, and Siwol Chang 2012 supported with a 77. Mario Mastromarino 2012 rounded out the scoring with a 78 and First Year Ryan Brand shot an 80 today. The “B” squad tallied a very respectable 297 for the opening round, leaving them a mere nine shots behind their compatriots.

Competing Individually, first-years Alex Xu and Hrishi Srinageshi shot rounds of 81 and 82, respectively.

With the 288 total, Williams “A” holds a two stroke lead over Salem State, with NYU (294 total), Middlebury (297 total), and Williams “B” (298 total) right in the mix.

“There were some good efforts from a number of our players out there today,” said Coach Pohle. “Some of our upper classmen are regaining the form they displayed as freshman. I think the competition that is developing within the team will only make us tougher as the season unfolds.”

The Ephs' look to hold their lead and finish strong tomorrow in the final round.

Williamstown Elementary Principal Making Plans to Use New Math Position

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williamstown Elementary School's principal last week told the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee that the best use of an additional $120,000 in the fiscal year 2027 budget is to hire a math interventionist for the school.

Benjamin Torres on Wednesday gave the board an update on the school with a focus on the need to address instruction in mathematics.

Those concerns prompted a request from the WES School Council to include the full-time math interventionist position in the FY27 budget.

School councils are committees of staff and community members in each building of a regional school district that are charged with assessing and advocating for the needs of individual schools.

Although funding for the position was not included in what district administrators characterized as a "level services" budget that it sent to both member towns, some Williamstown parents took their case directly to town meeting, which voted to amend the town's assessment to the district, adding the additional $120,000 to cover salary and benefits for new position.

Torres last week reminded the School Committee of the arguments he made for an interventionist when he presented the School Council's report back in February.

"My goal is to highlight the amazing growth we've seen with our students and the amazing work being done by our teachers, but also highlight there's a small group of students who are not closing the gaps quickly enough to be prepared to be successful at the upcoming grade level," Torres said. "This is why the School Council has been advocating not just for an interventionist but for a more systematic approach when it comes to interventions."
