Williams Sports Info By Melissa Whitaker 09:11AM / Monday, October 19, 2009
MIDDLEBURY, VT – After winning 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-17) against Bowdoin early in the day, the Williams College volleyball team (13-7) lost to Tufts 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 22-25, 13-25), just missing their opportunity to avenge the Jumbos for the 3-0 loss they suffered at the MIT Invitational last month.
In the match against Bowdoin, junior Kate Anderson dominated in the front row with 25 kills. Senior captain Chelsea Kubal followed close behind with 14 kills, also picking up 21 digs to lead the Ephs’ defense. This match was also a busy one for junior setter Emily Avis, as she racked up 55 total assists.
“The Bowdoin win for us was a solid match against a strong NESCAC opponent. We got off to a slow start but bounced back and won 3 straight sets after dropping the first,” said head coach Christi Kelsey. “We were able to carry that momentum into the Tufts match and executed extremely well in the first set.”
Both Tufts and Williams came into today’s match having lost only one conference match each. The Ephs’ momentum propelled them into the match and helped them win the first set 25-16. In the end, Tufts outscored the Ephs for the last three games. “To Tufts credit, they battled back and we couldn’t manage to pull out another set,” said coach. “It was disappointing but we will see them again and still have to finish the regular season strong in the next two weeks.”
Leading the defense for the Ephs were Kubal and fellow senior Andrea Scioscia who got 16 and 21 digs, respectively. On offense, Avis got up 37 assists while Anderson (19 kills) and junior Nicole Ballon-Landa (11 kills) led the team in spikes.
The next bought for the Ephs comes October 23 when the team travels to Smith College for the Volleyball Hall of Fame Invitational, game time TBA.
