Williams Sports Info By Kelsey O. Ham 07:43PM / Saturday, October 24, 2009
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Williams (5-8, 5-3 NESCAC) showed a lot of hustle despite the constant downpour Saturday afternoon at Renzie Lamb field for senior day, but couldn't overcome the Jumbos improving their record to 12-1, 7-1 in NESCAC. The field was slippery, but both teams managed to maintain composure throughout the competition.
Tufts opened the frame with a smattering of shots alternated with penalty corners. On their fifth penalty corner opportunity only 3:40 into the half, senior Michelle Kelly passed to junior Jess Perkins who knocked in the ball for the Jumbo's game-winning goal. Williams stepped up their defensive intensity putting more heat on Tuft's offense, but failed to convert their focus into shot opportunities. The Jumbos outshot the Ephs 15-0 for the period and had a 10-0 penalty corner advantage.
The second half began similar to the first when Kelly burst through traffic and found the net off a pass by junior Tamara Brown just over a minute into the frame. Despite William's hustle, the Jumbo's aggressive offense dictated the pace of the game. 41:40 into the competition, Tufts junior Amanda Russo ran the ball up the left line and was met in the circle by Eph junior goalie Katrina Tulla (New Canaan, CT). Her shot rebounded off Tulla's pads into the hands of Brown who lifted the ball past Tulla and into the goal improving their score, 3-0. Tufts held on to the lead for the remainder of the game, and outscored the Ephs 11-1. The Jumbos tallied 8 penalty corners to William's 0.
Tulla stayed active in the goal throughout the game finishing with an impressive 17 saves, while Tufts sophomore goalie Marianna Zak had one save for the afternoon. Both spent the full 70 minutes in the net. First-years Cornelia Burleigh (Darien, CT), Casey Greene (Greenwich, CT), and Sarah Eades (Charlotte, NC) each bolstered the Eph's defense contributing strong individual performances.
"I felt like we really hustled today and improved on our last few games, but Tufts is a strong team and it wasn't enough to overcome their focus," commented Coach Alix Burrale.
The Ephs will play again at Middlebury this Friday at 3:30PM.
