LENOX, Mass. — The Cantilena Chamber Choir and the Trinity Church youth and adult choirs will present "The World's Favorite Carols" as voted by leading choirmasters surveyed by the BBC. The performance will be Sunday, Dec. 6, at 3 p.m. at Trinity Church.
The concert will feature music from the list of 50 greatest carols compiled in a survey conducted by the BBC Music magazine in December 2008. Fifty choirmasters from major British and American churches, cathedrals and chamber choirs were asked to choose their five all-time favorite carols from the 4th century to the 21st. The results blended old favorites with previously unknown rarities.
Included in the program will be a countdown of the top 10 carols by Leighton (No. 5 "Lulla, lulla"), Warlock (No. 4 "Bethlehem Down"), Howells (No. 3 "A Spotless Rose"), Pearsall (No. 2 "In dulci jubilo") and the No. 1 favorite carol of all time, Harold Darke's "In the Bleak Midwinter."
A few less well-known works includ John Tavener's "The Lamb" (No. 24), and Arvo Part’s "Bogoroditse Dyevo" (favorite of composer John Rutter). The children's choir will sing the Darke and Pearsall carols, as well as "See Amidst the Winter Snow" (No. 47) by John Goss and "I Wonder as I Wander" (No. 30) by John Jacob Niles.
All tickets are $15 and are available at the door or in advance through satbchoir@yahoo.com or 413-637-2440. Trinity Church is located at 88 Walker St.
