Friday: Jean Germain @ Chapters Book Store

Friday, Chapters Book Store welcomes photographer Jean Germain as its featured artist for September. Germain was a founding member of The Jazz Club of Sarasota Florida, and as the "official photographer" spent a quarter century taking pictures of the yearly performances. That body of work became a book, Jazz From Row Six, published in 2009. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Friday+: Get Creative with Bisque, Beads and Beyond!

From learning the basics for creating your own necklaces and bracelets to a free adult ceramics class – Bisque, Beads and Beyond is offering a multitude of classes to help you find your inner artist! On Sunday, kids are welcome to take a tie dye class and learn how to use glaze to create a cool tie dye look onto a plate.

Friday - Thursday: Free Day + Little Cinema @ the Berkshire Museum

If you’re looking for something fun and free to do – check out the Berkshire Museum this Labor Day Weekend. On Saturday, the Museum is open free of charge, thanks to the Highland Street Foundation. The museum is also opening two new art shows: Henry Klimowicz's Paper and Light and Woodland Style, work by Berkshire artists that celebrates the crossover between art and nature, curated by Marlene Marshall.

Plus, the museum is extending its Little Cinema Season. This week, check out The Girl Who Played With Fire, the second installment of Stieg Larson’s popular Millenium trilogy.

The Pittsfield Colonials continue their playoff push with a season-ending homestand on Sept 3-6 versus the Sussex Skyhawks.  Friday is Fan Appreciation Day culminating with a spectacular end-of-summer Fireworks Show. On Sunday, don’t miss Latin Day featuring special BBQ menu and live pre-game/post-game music, and a Post-Game BBQ in the Beer Gardens featuring the entire Colonials team and Manager Brian Daubach. Colonials players Juan Padilla and Angel Molina will also offer a Latin cooking demonstration. On Monday, it’s a Labor Day Matinee game starting at 2pm. Be one of the first to watch a staged reading of Freud's Last Stand playwright Mark St. Germain's new work, The Best of Enemies. The reading is directed by BSC’s own Julianne Boyd, and exposes the poison of prejudice in the hearts of a KKK member and a civil rights activist. Author and historian Studs Terkel called their dramatic journey "one of the most moving love stories I've ever come across."

Multiple Departments Respond to Lanesborough Structure Fire

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Multiple fire departments responded to a structure fire off Narragansett Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Fire Department received a call from the owner of 6 Bangor St. reporting a smoke and flames at around 1:44 p.m.

Firefighters arriving on scene reported heavy smoke emanating from the the 1940s single-family ranch home in the thickly settle neighborhood.

The blaze was brought under control in less than an hour and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries. 

"The homeowner was outside doing some work, evidently, opened the door when she came back in the house, and there were flames and smoke, so she backed out and called us, and that's all we know right now," Deputy Fire Chief Glen Storie said around 2:35 p.m. 

The fire was out at that time, and first responders observed "quite a bit of damage" to the home. The cause is still under investigation. 

Lanesborough, Cheshire, and Pittsfield departments responded to the scene, and Hancock covered the station during the call. 

"The first crew in knocked the fire right down with the first engine," Storie said. 

Smoke could be seen coming from the back of the home. Part of Narragansett Avenue and Bangor Avenue were blocked off while firefighters battled the blaze.
