BCC Students Veterans Alliance Hosts Soldiers for Santa

Print Story | Email Story
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Community College Students Veterans Alliance has organized "Soldiers for Santa," a community outreach program working in conjunction with Dreams of Joy, a program that helps families, the elderly and veterans struggling around the holiday season. SVA has volunteered to help Dreams of Joy by collecting items for the veterans in their care. Often, these veterans have no family and, due to their service to our country, have been left unable to fully care for themselves.

SVA asks the community, both on and off campus, for help in bringing joy to veterans this holiday season. Simply choose an ornament from the stocking on the SVA bulletin board, located in the rear of the SBA Lounge across from the Office of Student Life, and purchase the gift on the ornament you choose. Each ornament clearly states the request for a local veteran in need. Return the gift to the Office of Student Life or Financial Aid no later than Monday, Dec. 13.

Housing Secretary Visits Pittsfield's 'The First'

By Sabrina DammsiBerkshires Staff
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Just five months after opening, The First has already become a community hub for individuals in need of resources or a place to decompress.

The space is filled with donated items from a room full of clothing, lockers, a classroom, couches, a television, a ping-pong table, and more.

Located at 74 First St., the resource center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"[Visitors] come up to us daily and admit that this is a beautiful space, and we want to keep it in the community as a whole… It's a wonderful place for them to feel as part of the community," The First Program Director, John Jablonski, said.

The First was one of the stops on Housing Secretary Juana Matias' tour of supportive housing initiatives in Pittsfield.  In February, she was appointed to lead the state Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities.
