Senior Rebekeh Packer earned the annual Superintendent's Award.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Mount Greylock Regional High School senior Rebekeh Packer earned the coveted Superintendent's Award on Tuesday night after four years of academic and extracurricular excellence.

Superintendent of Schools Rose Ellis described Packer as a "charming and modest" leader of the school before presenting her the annual certificate and a bouquet of flowers.

"She's an important leader in our school," Ellis said. "She is extremely kind and thoughtful to others. She is one of the most charming, delightful and modest students."

Packer may be most known around the school campus for her "Tuesday reminders," when she make an announcement over the loud speaker reminding people to conserve electricity by turning the lights off. But that is not all Packer has done. Packer is one of the school's top students — including multiple high honors and acceptance into the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. She is an active participant in the school's Latin club, the Junior Classical League, a member of the choirs and even took the role of the Earl of Richmond in the most recent Shakespeare & Company production.

"She has a keen interest in environmental studies and in teaching and education around that topic," Ellis said. "Rebekeh has been a driving force behind our youth environmental squad."

While the accolades piled up, what really stuck in the minds of school staff that Ellis spoke to was Packer's personality. As an example, Ellis said one of the first days she arrived on campus after being hired in 2010, she met Packer in the school's community garden. When Ellis arrived in her office a few days later, she found a basket of fresh vegetables from the garden Packer had left for her.

"It's just been an honor to know her," Ellis said.

The annual award from the state Association of Superintendents is awarded to one student from each school in the state.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
