NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Williams College men's basketball team downed host Connecticut College, 71-50, Saturday afternoon with solid team play that featured 18 assists on 25 baskets.

"Last night we had three assists and 18 turnovers and we did not shoot the ball well," said Eph head coach Mike Maker. "We need to find other ways to score when we are not shooting well and we will. We have a lot of confidence in what we've got, who we are, and where we're going. It's a long season."

At 16:52 of the first half James Klemm knocked down the first of his five threes off a feed from Nate Robertson and the Ephs had the lead at 5-3. Williams held the lead until 7:23 of the half when the Camels' Rob Hartigan scored on a tip in making the score 22-21 in favor of the Camels.

On his next two shots Klemm gave the Ephs the lead for good when he hit a jumper with 7:05 left in the half and then turned a Camel miss into a three ball on the next possession with James Wang recording the assist and the Ephs led 26-22.

When the Camels' Matt Vadas hit a jumper with 1:55 to go before intermission to cut the Ephs lead to two, 30-28, it was again Klemm who turned the Camels back. This time Klemm drained a three off a feed from out of the paint from Brian Emerson with 1:38 to play.

The Ephs led 33-28 at the half.

In the second half Connecticut College got to within three when Bryan Gross scored on a layup at 16:39 to make the score 37-34, Williams.

Over the next 10 minutes the Ephs fashioned a 22-0 run and extended their lead to 25, 64-39, that Klemm capped off when he drilled another three. The 22-0 run featured 8 points from Klemm and six from Michael Mayer and boosted the Ephs to their 13th win on the year.

"I was very pleased by what I saw from our team today," Maker said. "We got knocked down last night, but we got back up today and played with a lot of spirit. We were highly competitive. We have not been as consistent on offense as I would like us to be yet, but this is a tough league."

Klemm led the scoring for the Ephs with 19 points on five threes and Michael Mayer added 14 with four buckets underneath and 6-6 from the free throw line. Taylor Epley, James Wang, and Hayden Rooke-Ley all scored 9 points.

"Don't overlook Nate Roberton's contributions today – 5 assists, no turnovers and he held their best player Matt Vadas to 15 points, " Maker said.

Matt Vadas led the Camels with 15 points and Bryan Gross chipped in with 10.

The Ephs held a 35-33 advantage on the boards and committed 10 less turnovers than the Camels (19).

Next up for the Ephs is a home game on Thursday vs. Skidmore College at 7 p.m.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
