LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Another member of the Mount Greylock Regional High School Committee is resigning but town officials are refusing the accept the resignation until they know why.

The Board of Selectmen voted down a motion Monday to accept the resignation letter of the town's three representatives John "Jack" Hickey until they can speak with him.

Hickey's letter simply reads that he is resigning effective July 2, 2012, and that he believes the timing is good to find a new member before the next school year. However, Selectman Robert Barton said he spoke briefly with Hickey, who apparently hinted that he did not like "the way the committee was going."

"I wanted to hear him out before we accepted his resignation," Barton said.

Hickey's term expires this year; he also served on the Lanesborough School Committee.

Barton said he thought Hickey has tried to accomplish many things that would be good for the town but was continually shut down. Those complaints sound similar to the January resignation of Abigail Reifsnyder. Reifsnyder said at the time that she, too, was frustrated with the way the committee acted.

Additionally, the committee's chairman, Robert Ericson, also representing Lanesborough, once threatened to resign after the board voted in a direction he opposed regarding a proposed cell tower and later tried to remove his words from the minutes.

Mount Greylock has seen a heavy turnover in staff in the last year. Principal Tim Payne, Business Manager Jennifer Coscia have also resigned this year. The school also eliminated the dean of students position and instead hired a new assistant principal. School Committee members were also concerned at recent turnover numbers among teaching staff.

Hickey was unavailable late Monday night for comment. He is also the chairman of the school's building subcommittee that is in the process of planning to build a new school. Should his resignation stand, someone may be appointed to fill his shoes until the November election.

Lanesborough Open Space and Recreation Plan Survey

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The town of Lanesborough is seeking input on its upcoming Open Space and Recreation Plan.

The town's Open Space and Recreation Plan Advisory Committee is asking the public to complete a 20-question survey about the community's outdoor recreation and conservation priorities, needs, and desires. The survey is open to both residents and visitors until Dec. 12.

The survey is on the town's website and at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LanesboroughOSRP. Paper copies are also available at the library and at town hall.

The responses will inform the committee's development of policies and strategies that the town and local partners will implement during the next 10 years to achieve the community's open space and recreation goals. Additionally, the town's updated Open Space and Recreation Plan will make the town eligible for state funding to improve its recreational facilities and protect natural resources.
