Local artist Mark Mulherrin will be exhibiting "If Not This..." which is comprised of his most recent artworks. The paintings are a result of his progression as an artist over the years. For this particular group of paintings, Mulherrin desired to make "simple pictures that are complete environments, places that are emotionally and visually complex while using the least amount of information to achieve that effect."

The North Adams Artists' Co-Operative Gallery, otherwise known as the NAACO Gallery, is an independently member-run organization of nearly 40 active and talented, primarily regional, artists exhibiting works in the field of fine and applied arts. Kniffin describes her work as "understated, semi-representational compositions in oil and watercolor, recording familiar things" and St. Pierre describes her work as "dynamic, textural, patterned ceramic hand built vessel-forms."

The Jarvis Rockwell Gallery will open "The Toy as Art," a custom art exhibit curated by Christina Scott, DownStreet Art Associate Gallery Manager. This exhibit brings together the work of both local and regional "custom" toy makers. "The pieces are hand-crafted and infinitely interesting and the artists bring new meaning to the function and aesthetic of toys." Said Stott.

Meet Me in the Middle of the Air by Sean Riley

MCLA Gallery 51 is pleased to present "Meet Me in the Middle of the Air," a solo exhibition of new work by local artist Sean Riley. The exhibition will feature paintings, drawings, and works constructed from fabric. Riley's recent work derives from a project he embarked on in response to the 2008 loss of his father in which he created a quilt from his father's clothes. Riley's ultimate goal with the project is to eventually use his father's entire wardrobe to create an extensive body of work.

Curated by Wendy James, "Local Color Revisited" is a group show of some of the local artists that participated in "Local Color" during DownStreet Art 2010. "Local Color" series focuses on supporting, growing, and showcasing the community that has existed in the region for decades. Wendy James worked with untrained artists in North Adams to present this exhibition of their art. Participating artists are Lee Martinez, Barbara May, Patrice Bolgen, Jon Payne, Bonnie Spencer, Daniel Field, Eileen Gloster, and Emily May.

One of the more interesting places for a "pop-up" gallery, the North Adams Transcript Office, will be exhibiting the work of Senior Reporter/Digital News Specialist Jennifer Huberdeau in a show entitled "Interludes: from bucolic places and literary pages." The exhibition is comprised of a variety of landscapes and fairy tale themed paintings created by Huberdeau over the last 5 years.

"Type High" presents the work of Wells College Victor Hammer fellow Katie Baldwin and her students. Katie Baldwin is a printmaker who has traveled to several countries as an artist in residence, including Japan, Mexico, and Cuba. The work on view by Baldwin's students was made during her "Art on the Press" class at the Book Arts Center at Wells College in Aurora, NY.

The exhibition entitled "I Don't Want to Wake U Up but I Really Want to Show U Something" features photographies by MCLA Alumnae Kristen Parker and documents Parker's 2010 semester abroad in Dundee, Scotland. Parker traveled to England, Paris, Amsterdam, and Berlin. "I grew up with a love for traveling and photographing. Experiencing other people's cultures intrigues me and reveals elements within my own culture that in normal circumstances would never emerge" said Parker.

This show features paintings, drawings, and prints in generally, if not exclusively, monotone mood. The work on view includes woodblock prints and engravings by Frank Curran, a series of striking charcoal streetscape drawings by Bob Lafond, and an installation of 150 drawings by Karen Walter. Urban nocturnes and other paintings by Thor Wickstrom will also be on view.

"Art About Town" is an artist- and citizen-based organization that builds community through public art projects. Art teacher Christina King, along with 9 students from Greylock Elementary School who participated in CAMP ("community art mural project"), an after-school program, brought this project to life. The students learned to replicate, enlarge, and transfer the doll images to the columns. Painting is being done with the help of their art teacher, Christina King, along with artist William Oberst, and MCLA student Stephanie Vanbramer. Dolls are scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2012.

In description of his work, Oberst said, "we all have a shared humanity. Should any of my pictures survivie for the next three hundred years, I would hope that people in that distant future see, in my art, how we felt about each other in the twenty-first century, and how we felt about being alive. "Flow" by Erin Ko and Alex Chouls

The Erin Ko and Alex Chouls' latest collaborative work uses SMS technology to visualize the collective consciousness exposed by communications technology. In "Flow", pieces of reflective fabric are layered and projected on. People walking by the installation are supplied with a short code they can text to. The projection is a series of flowing words that the installation receives via peoples' text messages. Newer words are larger and more populous and then become smaller and scarcer over time.

In a historic church, artist Eric Rudd's massive sculptural epic has been created for both an art experience and private meditation. With over 150 life-size figures, 250 low-relief ceiling figures, and a memorial to September 11th. 
 

The Phylogeny Project

Derek Parker and Anne Roecklein will continue to curate "The Phylogeny Project" using the lens of the "North Adams School" to examine the connections between artists. The term phylogeny is most often used in biology to explain evolutionary relationships between species, tracing backward in time to identify moments where two distinct organisms were so alike to be considered one and the same. "The Phylogeny Project" proposes to employ this same methodology, viewed through the lens of art and inspiration. Exhibition includes works by Derek Parker, Anne Roecklein, Adam Welch, Stephanie Armbruster, John Berry, Tyson Skross, Brent Fogt, Aaron Henderson, and Linda Bernal.

Working space and gallery by local textile artist, Martha Flood. Her designs are often inspired by textures and patterns found in the Berkshire woodland environments. The non-traditional natural images are examples of cutting edge pattern design and advanced digital fabric printing technologies.

Marta Gil and Estibaliz Vera from Vitoria, Spain, are part of the cooperative of mural artists that contributed in naming their city the "painted city." With this optimistic mural about change, they have shared their talent with all of us during the month of June and left a remarkable presence of their staying in North Adams through DownStreet Art.

The Artery will be hosting a "Taste of Italy" reception to accompany "Beyond the Far Blue Mountains," a fifty-three minute film by Molly Davies. The tasting will showcase food and drink from the region of Italy where the piece was filmed. DownStreet Art Associate Gallery Manager Shanti Sponder said: "The Artery has chosen to enhance the experience of the viewer through multiple senses by fathering the imagination of the audience and allowing them to lose themselves within the breathtaking scenery and alluring music that accompanies the fairy tale." 
Pop-Up Ceramic Art Walk

Gallery 107 will present a pop-up art walk which will feature work by ceramicist and Keene University professor, Paul McMullan. McMullan's work will be displayed on the sidewalk in front of the gallery as part of the ongoing exhibit "Lynn Richardson: Arctic Garden." McMullan's work plays off the role of traditional garden sculpture through his tongue and cheek guardians of the garden which will stand erect outside the gallery entrance.

As part of DownStreet Art's summer 2012 mural project, a second mural will be on view for the public on Center Street between Marshall Street and Holden Street. Hayuk is an internationally renowned artist from Brooklyn, NY, who has worked in fashion design, designed album covers, and has been commissioned to do advertisements for Bacardi. At the core of her practice are her murals, which she describes as "large, colorful, completely improvised, totally optimistic and abstract."

Celebrating Victoria Palermo's Bus Stand on Main Street, Kidspace will be hosting an event focusing on color and how it reacts with light when used on transparent material. Kidspace intern, Lo Sottile, commented, "in other words, come downtown to experiment with painting on bubble wrap!". Fun for kids et all!

Branch Gallery will be hosting a performative and interactive piece by Pittsburgh artist, Justin Hopper. Hopper will be presenting and manipulating, based on viewer interaction "Transmission"- an audio and text installation that delves into "dark nostalgia" by mashing cold-war childhood with that of the Black Death. As he describes: "modernist literature collides with Rod Serling and Ronald Reagan; Danse Macabre and Gogol; medieval joie de vivre and, of course, Joy Division."

The Sugar Shack Boys (Mike Wamba and Jason Peabody), Sarah Rae Brown of the Minerva Art Center, and stilt walkers and puppets from Main Street Stage will be entertaining DownStreet Art event goers throughout the evening. Be on the look-out for these performers as they will be spread out throughout the Main Street area. Enjoy great music and fun performances all night long!

Mother's Day: Weekend Outlook

Daffodil and Tulip Festival

The historic home and garden will conclude its annual Daffodil and Tulip Festival this weekend. The festival showcases more than 150,000 daffodils, tulips, and minor bulbs across eight acres of land.
 
The 48-acre estate will be decorated "with a variety of blooms, containers, displays and decorations against the backdrop of stunning views of Monument Mountain and the Berkshire Hills," the website said.
 
Mixed bouquets, container plants, and a pre-sale of spring bulbs will be sold at a pop-up shop outside the greenhouse. Food and refreshments will be for sale at the outdoor snack shack. Admittance to the inside of the house will be permitted for self-guided tours of the first floor and to provide access to the museum's gift shop.
