Trailblazers Eliminated from Women's Soccer Tournament

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Third-seeded Bridgewater State University blanked the sixth-seeded Trailblazers, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Swenson Field.

Thet Bears improve to 9-8-2 on the season with the win and will now advance to the tournament semifinals. Bridgewater will take on second-seeded Worcester State University on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Worcester. Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts ends the season with an overall mark of 7-11.

Sophomore forward Emily Lane and junior forward Erica Jonasson each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Bears. Lane opened the scoring in the 23rd minute as she found the back of the next from 18 yards out off a rebound of a Jonasson shot. The goal marked Lane's eighth of the season.

Freshman forward Mackenzie Hatfield notched her eighth marker of the year in the 39th minute to stake the Bears to a 2-0 lead. Sophomore forward Lauren Bandoian set up the scoring strike with her first of two assists on the evening. Bandoian sent a pass to the middle of the box and Hatfield deposited her shot over the MCLA netminder and into the back of the net.

Bandoian sent Jonasson in on a breakaway with a minute and twenty seconds remaining in the opening stanza with a long pass up field. Jonassan dribble by the goalie and slid a shot into the unguarded net for her fifth goal of the season.


BSU junior forward Olivia Creonte capped off the scoring in the 65th minute with Lane picking up the assist. Lane slipped a pass through the defense and Creonte connected for her third goal of the year with a shot from the left side.

Bridgewater dominated play from start to finish as the Bears outshot the Trailblazers, 25-9, and held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

BSU's goaltending tandem of junior Kerry Condon and senior Kristen Rowe combined to make five saves with Condon recording her eighth win of the season. Junior Danielle Heinsohn turned aside six shots between the pipes for MCLA.

SteepleCats Fall in Extra Innings

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Ocean State Waves scored four runs in the top of the 11th and went on to a 9-6 win over the SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
 
Jack LaRose went 3-for-5 with a double in the game-winning rally.
 
North Adams (1-9) had a golden opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the 10th.
 
With the game tied, 5-5, Nelphie Lopez started the inning with a sacrifice bunt to advance Bobby Stang, the "ghost runner," to third base. Ocean State (3-8) then intentionally walked the next two hitters to load the bases with one out.
 
Waves reliver Andrew Jacobs then got a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.
 
Jacobs struck out a pair and allowed one unearned run in the bottom of the 11th in three innings of work to earn the win.
 
North Adams used five pitchers. Joe LaPrade struck out a pair and allowed no runs in two innings of work.
