The Campbell Brothers triumphantly headline this year's Margaret Hart Fundraiser. The band, which has been playing together for nearly two decades, is known for their steel lap guitars played in a way you've never heard before! This talented family is rounded out by the gutsy, gospel vocalist, Katie Jackson. Combining traditional African-American gospel music with the electric steel guitars and vocal, The Campbell Brothers are sure to please and provide an entertaining and enlightening evening for all to enjoy.

This riveting film centers on the most cerebral of games: chess. Brooklyn Castle (by Katie Dellamaggiore, 2012) tells the stories of five members of the chess team at I.S. 318, a below-the-poverty-line inner city junior high school that has won more national chess championships than any other in the country. Battling their opponents as well as recessionary budget cuts that threaten all extracurricular activities at their school, the students' dedication to their game magnifies their belief in the possible. Q&A with filmmaker Katie Dellamaggiore to follow.

Shake off the winter blues at North Adams' WinterFest! The North side of Main Street will be closed to make way for a full day of family-friendly activities, which will include ice sculpting, horse drawn wagon rides, a winter play area, a community camp fire, winter-themed art projects, and much more! As always, between 12 and 2 the public is invited to taste chowders offered up by area eateries and vote for their favorite. The day will end with a skate party at the North Adams Skating Rink. Performances, vendors, and events are added daily, so email tourism@northadams-ma.gov for a full schedule.

My Robot Friend is a musical and performance art project born from the ashes of the late '90s NYC band Princess (made up of Howard Robot, Miguel Gutierrez, and Autojulie3000), which broke up just before signing on to the legendary label Too Pure (PJ Harvey, Stereolab). Led by Howard Robot, My Robot Friend performs in an elaborate light-up suit while interacting with illuminated objects, wireless video cameras, and pyrotechnics. My Robot Friend's set will be preceded by a program of robot-themed mischief... you won't want to miss!

DownStreet Art, a program of MCLA's Berkshire Cultural Resource Center, is pleased to announce an OPEN CALL for artists, curators, performers, and muralists for its sixth edition! For all the details on how to apply and to download the application form please click on the link above. Opportunities are many to show your work, present a new challenging curatorial project, perform in conjunction with one of the DownStreet Art Thursday and/or to paint a mural downtown North Adams. DSA 2013 will run from June 20 through October 31. There is no application fee and your work will be reviewed and chosen by a curatorial committee which includes representatives and curators from all the major museums in the Berkshire. APPLY NOW!

Winterfest Volunteers Needed!

The Office of Tourism & Community Events is in need of volunteers to lend a hand during our annual WinterFest, happening February 23rd in downtown North Adams. Volunteers are primarily needed for set up and staffing of the ChowderFest Competition. We will have shifts from 11-1, and 1-3. We will also need a few volunteers throughout the day, anytime between 8am and 4pm. If interested contact Veronica Bosley at (413)664-6180 or tourism@northadams-ma.gov.

North Adams Council Gives Initial OK to Zoning Change

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council wrapped up business in about 30 minutes on Tuesday, moving several ordinance changes forward. 
 
A zoning change that would add a residential property to the commercial zone on State Road was adopted to a second reading but met with some pushback. The Planning Board recommended the change.
 
The vote was 5-2, with two other councilors abstaining, indicating there may be difficulty reaching a supermajority vote of six for final passage.
 
Centerville Sticks LLC (Tourists resort) had requested the extension of the Business 2 zone to cover 935 State Road. Centerville had purchased the large single-family home adjacent the resort in 2022. 
 
Ben Svenson, principal of Centerville, had told a joint meeting of the Planning Board and City Council earlier this month that it was a matter of space and safety. 
 
The resort had been growing and an office building across Route 2 was filled up. 
 
"We've had this wonderful opportunity to grow our development company. That's meant we have more office jobs and we filled that building up," he said. "This is really about safety. Getting people across Route 2 is somewhat perilous."
