LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The carnival is coming back to the Berkshire Mall.
The Board of Selectmen approved Monday the return of the Gillette Carnival, which pitches its tent in the Berkshire Mall parking lot from May 1 until May 11.
According to Berkshire Mall General Manager Joseph Scelsi, the carnival will start setting up later this week and then opens for the first week in May.
The full set up will be removed by May 15. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Lanesborough Police Association, he said.
"It's just been a great event," Scelsi said of the prior carnivals held there.
Also at the mall, the Board of Selectmen granted a pawnbroker's license to Syed Quaseem, who plans to open Gold Expressions. Quaseem said he previously held the business at a different location in the mall and is looking to reopen it.
The reopening of a gold pawn shop comes only months after the Board of Selectmen shut down a business that was uncooperative with police. Last year, the town implemented a permitting process setting certain criteria of pawn brokers to help the Police Department with investigations.
"We won't mess around if you aren't assisting the officers," Chairman John Goerlach told Quaseem.
Goerlach also reported that the town is looking to create a revolving fund for Laston Park so it can raise money to purchase more land. Goerlach said about 2 acres of buildable land is eyed to be added to the park.
In other business, Town Administrator Paul Sieloff said the Lanesborough School Committee will present its budget on Wednesday. From there, he will make the final tweaks and hopes to have a full budget proposal by the next Board of Selectmen's meeting.
Sieloff also reported that the town has been receiving a lot of complaints about the watercraft races the Board of Selectmen approved for July.
"There has been a lot of feedback about the Jet Ski competition," he said. "We have gotten a number of emails. There has been some concerns."
Sieloff said many of the issues are being addressed, such as noise and pollution currently being looked at by the state Department of Environmental Protection.
