Terranova Wins Write-In Campaign For Mount Greylock School Committee

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Al Terranova won a seat on the Mount Greylock School Committee in a write-in bid.

Terranova was facing David Vogel, both of whom were mounting write-in campaigns for the seat being vacated by Richard Cohen, who resigned. The seat is one of three representatives that Lanesborough has on the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee. Sheila Hebert ran unopposed to retain her seat and Christopher Dodig's term doesn't expire until 2018.

Terranova, a longtime Finance Committee member, won the election after receiving 190 combined votes in Lanesborough and in Williamstown. That's compared to 59 for Vogel. Terranova found significant support in Williamstown, where voters wrote him in by a 132-10 margin. In Lanesborough, Terranova still came out on top by the closer margin of 58-49.

"My wife and I are blessed to live in a community like Lanesborough that values education so highly; it has given my sons a great opportunity and I will work to give that sane advantage to other families and students. And, of course, I thank all those who supported me," Terranova said on Wednesday.

Terranova is a former school adjustment counselor with 33 years of experience in education. He was the president of the Pittsfield School Administrators Association, for which he was responsible for union negotiations, grievances, arbitration, mediations, coaching and budgets.

"The main reason I am running is that I want Mount Greylock to continue to offer the same outstanding education that was afforded my two sons," Terranova said prior to the election. "Education has always been a cornerstone for Lanesborough as it has been in my personal and professional life."

More recently, he chaired the town's Finance Committee, of which he was a member for a decade. However, he lost his re-election bid to the Finance Committee last spring to Rebecca Flood.

Hebert retained her seat on the Mount Greylock School Committee after receiving a combined 3,879 votes — 1,239 from Lanesborough and 2,590 from Williamstown.

The Williamstown representatives Gary Fuls and Steven Miller also won re-election in unopposed races. Fuls received a total of 2,908 votes, 822 of those from Lanesborough and 2,086 from Williamstown. Miller received 2,431 votes, 654 from Lanesborough and 1,777 from Williamstown.
