SVMC Outpatient Rehabilitation’s Functional Capacity Evaluator Now Certified
BENNINGTON, Vt.— Michaelia St. Jacques, an occupational therapist at SVHC Outpatient Rehabilitation, has completed a Roy Matheson’s System certification for performing Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE).
FCEs are a systematic way of assessing an individual's physical capacities and functional abilities. The assessment evaluates physical abilities through use of standardized tests, including grip strength and dexterity, for instance. They are used to provide professionals with objective information regarding functional work ability for job placement, job accommodation, or return to work after injury or illness.
The rigorous certification required St. Jacques to demonstrate skills and standards-meeting activities through the submission of more than 10 reports over 18 months. The certification provides assurance patients and other organizations interested in a person’s physical abilities that the patient has undergone a reliable and non-biased test.
Those needing a functional capacity evaluation may be referred to St. Jacques by an array of professionals including physicians, worker compensation, insurance companies, and lawyers. Functional capacity evaluations are performed in the Outpatient Rehabilitation Department, located in the Toolan Building on the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center campus.
