Adams Town Election Set For May

ADAMS, Mass. — Nomination papers are available at Town Hall for the town election in May.
 
There are two selectmen seats open this year. Current officeholder John Duval's term ends this year and there is a vacant seat left by former Selectman Arthur "Skip" Harrington, who resigned last year.  
 
The Board of Selectmen decided not to fill his seat and have been operating with four members.
 
Both of these seats are for three-year terms.
 
Adams-Cheshire Regional School District Committee member Stephan Vigna's three-year also ends this May and that seat is also up for election. 
 
McCann School Committee member Aaron Dean will also have to run again if he wants to hold his seat for another three years.
 
Town Clerk Haley Meczywor’s three-year term will also be up as is well Assessor Donna Aitken Macdonald's term.
 
Current Planning Board member Martha Stohlmann's three-year term will also culminate this year.
 
There is a potential for contests on the Board of Health and the Cemetery Commission. Current officeholder Bruce Shepley's three-year terms on both boards will expire this year.
 
Three members of the Parks Commission — James Fassell, Todd Shafer and Jason Sniezek — are also up for election. All three seats are three-year terms.
 
Library trustees have two three-year terms expiring. Current officeholders are James Loughman and Eugene Michalenko.
 
Stephanie Melito's five-year term on the Housing authority will expire as will Elizabeth Bushey's five-year term on the Redevelopment Authority.
 
There is a vacant one-year term seat on the Housing Authority and a five-year and a two-year seat on the Redevelopment Authority.
 
As for town meeting, there are 10 three-year seats and two one-year seats up for grabs in Precinct 1 and Precinct 2.
 
In Precinct 3 there are 10 three-year seats open, two two-year seats open and five one-year seats open.
 
In Precinct 4 there are 10 open three-year seats come May and five one-year seats.
 
There are 10 three-year seats open in Precinct 5.
 
Deadline for all candidates to return papers is March 19 and the deadline for incumbent town meeting members to notify the town clerk that they are running again is March 12.
 
The deadline to withdraw or object to nomination papers is April 4 and the deadline to register to vote is April 17.
 
The deadline for filing initial campaign finance reports is April 30 and final filing is June 6. 
 
Report period ends 10 days before the deadline
 
The election will take place Monday, May 7.

Adams Free Library Pastel Painting Workshops

ADAMS, Mass. — Award-winning pastel artist Gregory Maichack will present three separate pastel painting workshops for adults and teens 16+, to be hosted by the Adams Free Library. 
 
Wednesday, April 24 The Sunflower; Wednesday, May 8 Jimson Weed; and Thursday, May 23 Calla Turned Away from 10:00 a.m. to noon.  
 
Registration is required for each event.  Library events are free and open to the public.
 
These programs are funded by a Festivals and Projects grant of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
 
This workshop is designed for participants of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Attendees will create a personalized, original pastel painting based on Georgia O’Keefe’s beautiful pastel renditions of The Sunflower, Jimson Weed and Calla Turned Away. All materials will be supplied. Seating may fill quickly, so please call 413-743-8345 to register for these free classes.
 
Maichack is an award-winning portraitist and painter working primarily in pastels living in the Berkshires. He has taught as a member of the faculty of the Museum School in Springfield, as well as at Greenfield and Holyoke Community College, Westfield State, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
