Major Storm Forcing Delays and Cancelations

School Closings: Check our page for school closures. Currently, Stamford and Abbott Memorial will be closed Monday as well as all schools in the Southwestern Vermont Supervisory Union. 

Other closings and delays: 

  • Mass MoCA opens at noon

A monster snowstorm will bring up to 18 inches of snow across the Berkshires over the next 24 to 36 hours.

Initial forecasts of 4 to 6 inches have now been upgraded to 12 to 18 across the region with ice and sleet through southern New England and New York State. 
 
The National Weather Service says snow will start falling in the Berkshires between 2 and 3 p.m. and isn't expected to stop until Tuesday morning. Accuweather says major impacts of up to 2 feet of snow could occur in the higher elevations of the Catskills and Berkshires hills. 
 
So far only Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts has canceled classes but we expect there may be more cancellations and delays once the full impact of the storm becomes apparent. We will be updating this article with any new closings and cancellations into Monday morning. 
 
The Northern and central Berkshires are anticipated to get up to 6 inches of snow over a 12-hour period. Snowfall on Sunday afternoon will be heaviest at about an inch to 2 inches an hour. There'll be a lull on Monday afternoon as a second storm moves through the region and into Tuesday. 
 
The state Department of Transportation is urging people to stay off the roads and snow emergencies have been declared in a number of local communities: no parking on streets during snowfall so plows can get through. Motor vehicles in the way may be towed.

Clarksburg FinCom, Select Board Agree on $1.9M Town Operating Budget

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The town is looking at an operating budget of $1,859,413 for fiscal 2025, down a percent from this year largely because of debt falling off.
 
Town officials are projecting a total budget at about $5.1 million, however, the School Committee is not expected to approve a school budget for two more weeks so no final number has been determined.
 
Town officials said they've asked the school budget to come in at a 2 percent increase. Finance Committee member Carla Fosser asked what would happen if it was more than that. 
 
"Then we would need to make cuts," said Town Administrator Carl McKinney, adding, "I'm a product of that school. But at the same time, we have a town to run to and, you know, we're facing uncertain weather events. And our culverts are old, the roads are falling apart. ... ." 
 
The assessment to McCann Technical School is $363,220, down about $20,000 from this year.
 
The major increases on the town side are step and cost-of-living raises for employees (with the exception of the town clerk at her request), the addition of a highway laborer, an increase in hours from 16 to 24 for the town accountant, and insurance and benefits that are about $70,000. There is a slight increase for employee training and supplies such as postage.
 
Select Board Chair Robert Norcross at Wednesday's joint meeting with the Finance Committee, said the town's employees are hard-working and that wages aren't keeping up with inflaction.
