The annual Spring Radio Auction will be held Saturday, March 1, 2003 on WUPE (95.9 FM) and WUHN (1110 AM). Tens of thousands of dollars in merchandise will go to the highest bidder. Listeners hear the merchandise described on the air, then call in bids to 499-1100. If they are the high bidder they'll receive a confirming telephone call, then they visit the radio stations at 501 East Street in Saint Luke Square and pay with cash, check, Visa, or MasterCard. Philip A. Weiner, President of WUPE & WUHN, states that the Auction is a listener promotion. "We acquire the merchandise from merchants, and then sell it off for whatever we get. It's a great savings event for our listeners. They can buy services and merchandise for 50, 60, 70, and even 80 per cent below retail prices." According to Weiner, all merchandise is sold to the highest bidder no matter what the bid. "I've seen items that retailed for five hundred dollars sell for just fifty. People get incredible deals." The auctioneers for the event are David Isby and Cheryl Tripp-Cleveland, popular WUPE personalities, and Alex Seseske, WUPE morning host.. The auction starts at 9AM Saturday and continues until everything is gone, about 4PM. The year 2003 marks the 20th year WUPE & WUHN have conducted the Auction promotion. Brochures are available at the radio stations listing most of the merchandise that will be put up for bid. A merchandise listing is also available on the stations web site (www.wupe.com or www.wuhn.com). The listing does not denote the order in which the items will be sold.
