The Selectmen will begin the search for another building inspector in the new year. The average tenure for inspectors has been less than two years since 2000.
ADAMS, Mass. — Building Commissioner Don Torrico plans to resign early next year.
Interim Town Administrator Donna Cesan gave Torrico's letter of resignation to the Selectmen on Wednesday and said the position will be posted immediately.
"The town has been through this before and I plan to get an add out next week," Cesan said. "There is really no time to waste here and this is difficult position to fill."
Torrico was hired in 2016 following the resignation of Commissioner Don Fitzgerald. During his tenure, the town extended his services to New Ashford and looked to share the service with other smaller communities.
The town has had difficulties maintaining a building commissioner and since the year 2000, has had more than 10 different commissioners.
After former Commissioner Jeff Clemons resigned in 2015 the town decided to raise the salary in hopes of attracting better candidates.
Cesan said Torrico plans to use up some holiday vacation time and his last day will be Jan. 2. She said it is important before he leaves to get his processes and projects in order.
"I did talk to him about the need to work together and we need to know where the files are and how he sets up the office, so we will be working together on that," she said.
Cesan said Torrico will help the town reach out to other communities to find an interim commissioner to carry the town through the hiring process.
"He will be reaching out to local building commissioners to see who could help us out in the interim," she said. "He does feel bad about leaving the town and has offered to help us as much as he can."
In the meantime, the town still has a local inspector in the office.

Adams Community Bank Holds Annual Meeting, Announce Growth
ADAMS, Mass. — The annual meeting of the Community Bancorp of the Berkshires, MHC, the parent company of Adams Community Bank, was held on April 10, 2024, at Charles H. McCann Technical School in North Adams.
The meeting included reviewing the 2023 financial statements for the Bank, electing directors and corporators, and highlighting upcoming executive personnel changes.
"In 2023, the Bank experienced another year of growth in assets, loans, and deposits, noting the Pittsfield branch reached $26 million in customer deposits from its opening in December of 2022," President and CEO of Adams Community Bank Charles O'Brien said. "Those deposits were loaned out locally during 2023 and helped drive our #1 ranking in both mortgage and commercial real estate lending, according to Banker and Tradesman."
At year-end 2023, total assets were $995 million, and O'Brien noted the Bank crossed the $1 billion threshold during the first quarter of 2024.
Board chair Jeffrey Grandchamp noted with O'Brien's upcoming retirement, this will be the final annual meeting of the CEO's tenure since he joined the Bank in 1997. He thanked him for his 27 years of dedication to the Bank. He acknowledged the evolution of the Bank as it became the premier community bank in the Berkshires, noting that branches grew from 3 to 10, that employees grew from 40 to 135, and that assets grew from $127 million to $1 billion.
An executive search is underway for O'Brien's replacement.
