MCLA Men, Women Fall at Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The MCLA men's basketball team led for most of the first half, but Worcester State used a strong second half surge to earn an 86-68 conference win over the Trailblazers.
 
Tyler Dion led all scorers with 18 points while Erik Bjorn added 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Lancers (9-7, 2-1 MASCAC) Shaun McCarthy ended with 13 points and nine rebounds.
 
MCLA (4-11, 0-3) led by a point at halftime and then 48-44 following a Gerald Herbert jumper before the Lancers made their game changing run.  Worcester used a 13-1 spurt to pull ahead 57-49 with nine minutes remaining in the contest and never looked back. After a Frantz Francois three point play extended the lead to double figures, MCLA never threatened again.
 
Antoine Montgomery led MCLA with 17 points and four steals.
 
MCLA is back home on Wednesday when it hosts Fitchburg State at 5:30 p.m.
 
Women's Basketball
WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Worcester State University women's basketball team prevailed over the MCLA Trailblazers, 65-54.
 
The Lancers (10-4, 2-1) shot 58 percent from inside in the arc in the first quarter. Brittany Herring finished the game as the high scorer with 18 points to go along with her nine boards.
 
For MCLA (4-9, 0-3) L'Rae Brundige led the way with 14 points in the matchup. Hannah Mazzeo grabbed six boards, three of them offensive and chipped in eight points in the Trailblazer effort.
 
 The Trailblazers will host Fitchburg State University on Wednesday evening in a conference matchup set to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Senior Golf Series Returns in September

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Berkshire County Fall Senior Golf series returns in September with events on five consecutive Wednesdays starting Sept. 18.
 
It is the 22nd year of the series, which is a fund-raiser for junior golf in the county, and it is open to players aged 50 and up.
 
The series will feature two divisions for each event based on the combined ages of the playing partners.
 
Golfers play from the white tees (or equivalent) with participants 70 and over or who have a handicap of more than 9 able to play from the forward tees.
 
Gross and net prices will be available in each division.
 
The cost is $55 per event and includes a round of golf, food and prizes. Carts are available for an additional fee.
 
Golfers should call the pro shop at the course for that week's event no sooner than two weeks before the event to register.
