Robert G. Blair Sr., 99

HANCOCK, Mass. — Robert Grey Blair Sr., 99, of 2175 Hancock Road died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Williamstown Commons.

Mr. Blair was a former Hancock selectman.

Born in Hancock on March 12, 1915, a son of Charles Henry and Florence Grey Blair, he attended schools in Hancock and the former Williamstown High School.

Mr. Blair and his father were loggers for many years and often sawed logs for customers in the area. He was also a carpenter and worked several years with Leon Roberts of Hancock and Irving Lane of North Adams. He then was employed at the Mount Greylock State Reservation.

After his retirement, he was employed part time as the road superintendent and tree warden for the Town of Hancock. He also assisted in the operations of the Blair Farm.

He was a member of Second Congregational Church of South Williamstown and a founding and longtime member of the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department. He also was a member of the Ox Pullers Association of Massachusetts and the Association of Road Superintendents of Massachusetts.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and woodworking. His oxen, always named Tom and Jerry, often pulled a cart in the Hancock parades.

He and his wife, the former Emma Elizabeth Whitman, were married June 20, 1941.

Besides his wife if 72 years, he leaves a daughter, Norma Quimby and her husband, Donald, of Hancock; a son, Robert G. Blair Jr. and his wife, Peggy, of Northwood, N.H.; five grandchildren, John and Jeffrey Quimby of Hancock, Robert G. Blair III and Scott Blair of New Hampshire and Jaime Blair of Pennsylvania; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mr. Blair Sr. will take place Friday, May 30, at 11 from Second Congregational Church of South Williamstown. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Village Ambulance through theFlynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA 01247.
