McCann Hosts Lead Safety Training for Renovators

04:15PM / Thursday, June 24, 2010

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Renovation contractors will have to abide by new rules lead safety rules set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency scheduled to go into effect April 22.

McCann Technical School will be hosting a series of workshops, in cooperation with Mary Chabot Training of Greenfield, to provide the required certification in lead handling. The one-day classes will be given starting on July 1 and continue through the summer.

The new EPA rules require contractors whose work disturbs existing lead paint surfaces to follow specific lead-safe practices to minimize public exposure. Lead dust generated by traditional renovation work can pose significant health hazards for workers. In adults, symptoms include high blood pressure, irritability, memory and concentration problems and sexual dysfunction. The greater risk, however, is to developing fetuses and children under age 6 who can suffer permanent damage to their central nervous systems resulting in learning disabilities, attention-deficit disorder and other behavioral problems.

Completion of the one-day, EPA-accredited class and a basic test requirement will provide contractors with a five-year certification in lead safety. Interested parties should contact Judi Campbell at 413-498-0098 for fee and scheduling information.
