2.2MW Solar Array Eyed for Stamford

According to a report in the Bennington Banner on Monday, Vermont Energy Parks LLC of Southport, Conn., has given notice of its intent to apply to the Vermont Public Service Board to install a 2.2-megawatt solar array off Sumner Road.
In a presentation to the Selectmen in August, Gabriel M. Selig, president of Southport Power LLC, said the Stamford solar farm would comprise some 7,900 panels on 20 acres of land owned by the Orton family. The project would not "compromise the aesthetics of our town and will not negatively impact the natural animal habitat in the area," according to the meeting's minutes.
Selig had asked the town to waive a 45-day waiting period to file but that was rejected.
The size of the proposed $12 million Vermont Hill project puts it on par with Western Massachusetts Electric Co.'s massive array in Indian Orchard, Mass., and makes it larger than the 1.8MW system WMECo installed at Silver Lake in Pittsfield, Mass. Adams, Mass., is installing an array about half the size of the Stamford project through a power-purchase agreement and North Adams, Mass., is negotiating a similar one.
The company plans to use Vermont's 6-year-old SPEED, or Sustainably Priced Energy Development, Program.
