WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Carl James Norton, 59, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., formerly of Williamstown, died Thursday, April 18, 2014, in Florida.
Born in North Adams on March 3, 1955, son of Phyllis McNanley Norton of Williamstown and the late Jerome H. Norton, he grew up in Williamstown and attended local schools. During his teens he worked at the former Springs Restaurant and was a lifeguard at Margaret Lindley Park. He graduated from Fitchburg State College in 1977and eventually moved to Florida.
Mr. Norton taught industrial arts in Ormond Beach, Fla., then went to work for the County of Port St. Lucie at the wastewater treatment plant and as a restaurant inspector.
He was an active member of the Rotary Club, for many years playing its Santa Claus and distributing gifts to children, often arriving by helicopter.
He and his wife, the former Eileen McCall, were married in July 1978.
Besides his wife and mother, he leaves a daughter, Danielle Norton; a sister, Jennifer Jayko and her husband, James, of Williamstown; a brother, Jerome D. Norton and his wife, Kathleen, of South Hadley, and their daughter, Lila.
His brother Christopher Norton died in 2004.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A Funeral Mass for Mr. Norton will be held on Saturday, April 26, at 10 from St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown. Memorial donations are suggested for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, C/O Anthony Molinari, 718 SW Port Lucie Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34953 or to the Sts. Patrick and Raphael Food Pantry in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247.
