Marcel E. Hinkell, 75

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Marcel Edgar Hinkell, 75, of Shelburne, formerly of North Adams, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Anchorage Nursing Home in Shelburne after a brief stay. Born in North Adams on July 11, 1926, son of John and Ada LaChapelle Hinkell, he attended parochial schools, Drury High School and Greenfield Community College. Mr. Hinkell enlisted in the Navy during World War II on his 17th birthday. He served in the African and European Theatre for three years, receiving medals for the European-African Middle Eastern Theatre campaign and the American campaign. Mr. Hinkell was employed as a signal testman for the Boston and Maine Railroad, now Springfield Technical Railroad, for 46 years. He was a supervisor for MCI Communications for a brief period following his railroad employment. He was a member of VFW Post 996 and the American Legion, both of North Adams. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Shelburne. Mr. Hinkell was a scoutmaster of Troop 69 in Greenfield for 12 years and continued on the troop committee. He was involved in Scouting for more than 60 years. He leaves his wife of 49 years, the former Therese Mann; two sons, Timothy Hinkell of Greenfield and Patrick Ciociola-Hinkell of Sterling; a daughter, Marcella Hinkell of Hooksett, N.H.; a brother, Harvey Hinkell of North Adams, seven grandchildren and a great-grandson. FUNERAL NOTICE — There will be no calling hours or flowers at the request of Mr. Hinkell. Following cremation at Eternal Flame, the Rev. John Roach, pastor, will officiate at a 10 a.m. mass, Friday, June 14, at St. Joseph's Parish in Shelburne Falls, followed by a burial at Hill Cemetery in Shelburne. Memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scouts Troop 69, Greenfield, in care of P.A. Mitchell, P.O. Box 475, Greenfield, MA 01301.
