Frederick S. Simon, 88

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Frederick Salem Simon, 88, of 335 State St. died Monday, March 13, 2006, at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in North Adams on April 16, 1917, son of Salem G. and Mabel Williams Simon, he was educated in North Adams schools. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 36th Engineer Battalion from March 18, 1943, until Sept. 11, 1944. On March 13, 1944, he was wounded in action during the Italian Campaign and was awarded the Purple Heart. He also received the Good Conduct Medal and the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater Medals. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to North Adams. Mr. Simon was employed by Petricca Construction Co. until his retirement. Previously, he had worked with his brother, Marvin Simon, in home construction, and was also employed by the General Electric Co. in Pittsfield. Prior to World War II, we was employed as a stitcher and supervisor in the shoe industry. His wife, the former Elizabeth "Sobet" Haddad, whom he married on Nov. 23, 1947, in Lebanon, died on Sept.15, 2004. He leaves two daughters, Darlene Fairs and Lois Rickert and her husband, David, all of North Adams; a son, Stephen Allen Simon of Bethlehem, Pa.; four sisters, Naheela Ferris and Rose Pause, both of North Adams, Ann Hebert of Pittsfield and Lois Shadyac of Vienna, Va.; two brothers, George Simon of North Adams and Robert M. Simon of Manassas, Va; six grandchildren, Daniel and Julie Rickert, of North Adams, Kerry Fairs of Australia, James Fairs of Albany, N.Y., Sabeth Simon of Bethlehem, Pa., and Tracy Kelly and her husband, James, of North Attleboro; a great-granddaughter, Kelsey Rickert, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters and three brothers, Lillian Simon, Pearl Simon, Mary Simon, Marvin Simon, Simon Simon, and Louis Simon. FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mr. Simon will take place Saturday morning, March 18, at 11 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Donations may be made to VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire in care of the funeral home, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
