Martin H. Walden, 96

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Martin H. Walden, 96, of 17 Northern Lights Ave. died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at Williamstown Commons. Born Aug. 28, 1914, son of Martin E. and Albina Bissaillon Walden, he attended local schools including the former Houghton Grammar School and Drury High School. He also attended a federal trade school for machine operators in Greenfield. A Navy veteran of World War II, he entered the service in 1944 and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington in the South Pacific. He was discharged in November 1945 as a machinist mate, 3rd class. Mr. Walden was employed by the former General Electric in Pittsfield for 26 years, retiring in 1977. Before the war, he first worked at the former Windsor Print Works, former Hoosac and Strong-Hewat mills and at Greenfield Tap & Die. In his younger years, he played baseball with the Stamford (Vt.) town team, the Kempville ACs and the Hoosac Mill team in the Men's Industrial League. Later, he enjoyed playing golf and bowling. He was a member of the Stamford Valley Golf Club, the Northern Berkshire Retired Men's Club and its bowling and golf leagues. He was a member of Post 996 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Post 125 American Legion and of the former Notre Dame Parish. His first wife, the former Evelyn Morse, whome he married in 1934 in Notre Dame Church, died March 11, 1977. His and his wife, the former Blanche Rita Robert Landry, were married Sept. 28, 1990, in Notre Dame Church. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Nancy Yoshida and her husband, Steve, and Judith Collins and her husband, Donald, both of Las Vegas, and Robin Zocchi and her husband, Chris, of Brandon, Fla.; a son, Michael Walden of Bellingham; a sister, Edith Langevin; a stepson, Albert "Chip" Landry and his wife, Paula, of Middleton, Del.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Frederick E. Walden and Arthur G. Walden; three sisters, Jessie Burtt, Marion LaBombard and Lillian Lavarriere; a daughter, Penelope Clare, in infancy, and his daughter-in-law, Carol Walden. FUNERAL NOTICE - Services for Mr. Walden will be Thursday morning, Dec. 2, at 10:15 from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday evening from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made to St. Elizabeth's Church through the funeral home.
