Harry J. George, 85

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Harry John George, 85, of George Avenue died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Mr. George was known for many years as the "Lawnmower Man" and was owner and operator of Mapleside Power Motors for more 50 years. Born in North Adams on Aug. 8, 1925, son of Clifford and Isabell Barber George, he attended schools in North Adams and graduated from Drury High School in 1943. A decorated Navy veteran of World War II, he served as a motor machinist's mate. Mr. George was employed as a welder at the former GE in Pittsfield for many years. He was a past president of the Adams Turners and enjoyed woodworking. He and wife, the former Margaret LaCrosse were married Aug. 5, 1950. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Joan Conroy and her fiance, Harry "Bud" Embry of the town of Florida, Christine Lacroix and Linda Field and her husband, Bruce, all of North Adams; two brothers, Harold "Murray" George of Arizona and Bruce George of Indiana; three grandchildren, April and Shawn Field and Jena-Lyn Bunn, and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his grandson Michael C. Field in 1994 and by two brothers, Howard and Clifford George. FUNERAL NOTICE - The services for Mr. George will take place at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8, from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial with military honors will follow in Southlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. Calling hours will be held Tuesday morning at the funeral from 11 until the time of the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Michael C. Field Scholarship Fund through the funeral home.
