Mac-Haydn Theatre -- "Fiddler on the Roof"

“Here’s My Wedding Present” -- Frumah Sarah (Trisha Stever) tells Tevye (Michael Shiles) and Golde (Elizabeth Dowling) in a fanciful “Dream” in “Fiddler On The Roof”. The eerily comic number helps Tevye turn Golde’s thoughts to the man their daughter Tzietel wishes to marry.
Chatham, NY -- “Fiddler On The Roof”, a show filled with warm family love, delightful humor and stirring songs, runs June 22 through July 2 at The Mac-Haydn Theatre here. “Fiddler On The Roof” begins with Tevye (played by Michael Shiles), a poor dairyman in the small Russian village of Anatevka, in 1905, explaining how “Tradition” holds their lives together. These traditions are threatened as his daughters wish to marry men of their own choosing. Tzietel chooses Motel, a poor tailor, instead of the wealthy butcher Lazar Wolfe. Tevye justifies his unwilling approval of this in the humorous “Dream” sequence. He is heartbroken when his second daughter, Hodel leaves home to be with the man she loves, Perchik, a revolutionary student. The cruelest cut comes when his beloved Chava unforgiveably runs away to marry a Russian. Throughout this, his wife Golde (Elizabeth Dowling) is staunchly by his side, scolding but loving, as shown in their duet “Do You Love Me?” The final blow comes when the pogroms force the entire village to leave; they lean on their faith and know that their traditions will bring them to new lands and lives. The songs and story interweave to enhance and elaborate on each other; the rich and touching score includes “Tradition, Sunrise Sunset, Matchmaker, If I Were A Rich Man, Now I Have Everything, and Far From The Home I Love”. Shiles has been a Mac-Haydn mainstay (The Major-General in “Pirates of Penzance”, Georges in “La Cage” and more) for many years. Ms. Dowling was reviewed as ‘…a delightful Nellie with a beautiful singing voice’ for her first Mac-Haydn role, in “South Pacific”. Ms. Shook, playing the role of Tzeitel, was last year’s favorite performer, for her diverse and delightful talents as Anytime Annie in “42nd Street”, Grace in “Copacabana” and Fiona in “Brigadoon”. Stephen Bolte, a favorite for comedy and character roles, will be Lazar Wolfe. Good seats are available for all performances of “Fiddler On The Roof”: first week Thursday at 2 and 8, Friday at 8, Saturday at 5 and 8:30 and Sunday at 2 and 7 p.m.; second week Wednesday at 2 and 8, Thursday and Friday at 8, Saturday at 5 and 8:30 and Sunday at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $24.50 and $23.50; $22.50 for all matinee seats; children under 12, $12.00. Pittsfield Affordable Housing Initiatives Shine Light, Hope

By Sabrina DammsiBerkshires Staff

Housing Secretary Edward Augustus cuts the ribbon at The First on Thursday with housing officials and Mayor Peter Marchetti, state Sen. Paul Mark and state Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier.
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The holidays are here and several community members are celebrating it with the opening of two affordable housing initiatives.

"This is a day to celebrate," Hearthway CEO Eileen Peltier said during the ribbon-cutting on Thursday.

The celebration was for nearly 40 supportive permanent housing units; nine at "The First" located within the Zion Lutheran Church, and 28 on West Housatonic Street. A ceremony was held in the new Housing Resource Center on First Street, which was funded by the American Rescue Plan Act.

The apartments will be leased out by Hearthway, with ServiceNet as a partner.

Prior to the ribbon-cutting, public officials and community resource personnel were able to tour the two new permanent supported housing projects — West Housatonic Apartments and The First Street Apartments and Housing Resource Center

The First Street location has nine studio apartments that are about 300 square feet and has a large community center. The West Housatonic Street location will have 28 studio units that range between 300 to 350 square feet. All units can be adapted to be ADA accessible.

The West Housatonic location is still under construction with the hope to have it completed by the middle of January, said Chris Wilett, Hearthway development associate.
