Conn. Woman Found in Otis Was Murder Victim

06:25PM / Friday, March 28, 2008

OTIS — Police arrested a Waterbury, Conn., man for the alleged murder of Whitney Bass, whose body was dumped in a wooded stretch along Route 8.

The Berkshire Eagle reported that Vernon L. Cowan Jr., 38, was arrested in New York City. Cowan is expected to be extradited to Connecticut to face charges of arson and murder.

The body of Whitney Bass, 20, was discovered around noon on Friday in a wooded area off Route 8. State police were asking for help in the investigation, particularly if anyone had been seen parked or walking along the roadway between the Otis Poultry Farm and Klondike Campground.

Both locations are on North Main Road, between about Ed Jones Road and Monterey Road.

According to media reports, Cowan was having an affair with Bass and the couple got into a fight in her Waterbury apartment. Police said Cowan killed Bass and dumped the body along Route 8, with which he was familiar.
