North Adams Implements Higher Parking Fines

Higher parking fines are in effect in downtown North Adams.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Watch your meters — the new parking fines are in effect in North Adams beginning this week.

The new schedule of fines approved by the City Council in June were awaiting the arrival of ticket books to begin the implementation of fees expected to raise another $54,000 a year in revenue.

A parking ticket for overstaying your welcome at an expired meter has doubled from $5 — what it's been for years — to $10. Demand notices for ticket scofflaws will add $10 if not paid in 21 days and an additional $10 if paid after the violation has been reported to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Another $5 late fee will be imposed after 45 days.

The city began installing new digital meters last fall that upped the parking fees from a nickel or dime to 25 cents an hour for no more than two hours. Vehicles must be moved at least five spaces after the initial two hours to avoid a parking fine of $10.



The new fines range from $10 to $300 for parking in a handicapped spot without permit. Leaving your keys in the car or the motor running is $15 a piece; parking in a fire lane will get you a $30 fine and within 5 feet of a hydrant, $15.

The bulk of the fines are $15 to $20, largely for parking in inappropriate places such as sidewalks, intersections, tow-away zones and private driveways. Winter parking that impedes snow removal is $30.

Parking meters in the downtown are in effect daily, except Sundays and holidays, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

MassDOT Warns of Toll-fee Smishing Scam

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation was alerted that a text message-based scam, also known as smishing, is fraudulently claiming to represent tolling agencies from across the country. The scammers are claiming to represent the tolling agency and requesting payment for unpaid tolls.

The targeted phone numbers seem to be chosen at random and are not uniquely associated with an account or usage of toll roads.

Customers who receive an unsolicited text, email, or similar message suggesting it is from EZDriveMA or another toll agency should not click on the link.

EZDriveMA customers can verify a valid text notification in several ways:

  • EZDriveMA will never request payment by text
  • All links associated with EZDriveMA will include www.EZDriveMA.com

The FBI says it has received more than 2,000 complaints related to toll smishing scams since early March and recommends individuals who receive fraudulent messages do the following:

1. File a complaint with the  Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov; be sure to include:

The phone number from where the text originated.
The website listed within the text

2. Check your account using the toll service's legitimate website.

3. Contact the toll service's customer service phone number.

4. Delete any smishing texts received.
