Philip Apkin, 93
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. â€' Philip Apkin, 93, of 19 East Quincy St. died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at the home of his daughter, Judith Libby Corwin, in Tyngsboro, with his family by his side.
Born in North Adams on Dec. 2, 1919, a son of George and Dora Weiner Apkin, he graduated from Drury High School.
A decorated veteran of World War II, he served with the 198th Quartermaster Truck Company as a private first class. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze service stars.
Mr. Apkin joined the family business, George Apkin & Sons Co., after the war. He also operated Ap's Auto Wrecking Co. and Environmental Action Co.
He was a lifelong member of Congregation Beth Israel, serving on several committees and as a member of its board of directors. He also was a member of the Jewish Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Berkshire Jewish Federation, Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion and North Adams Lodge of Masons. He was a very devoted father and grandfather.
His wife, the former Sarah "Sula" Pasiencier, whom he married Aug. 10, 1954, died March 12, 1994.
Besides his daughter and her companion, Cathy Surack, he leaves four sons, Michael Kuvent and his wife, Grace, of Pittsfield, George Mayer Apkin and his wife, Nancy, of North Adams, William Ruben Apkin and his wife, Jane, of Lanesborough and Joseph Robert Apkin and his wife, Anne, of Cheshire; eight grandchildren, Alysha Apkin, Corbin Apkin, Joshua Apkin, Elizabeth Apkin, Alexander Apkin, Sarah Apkin, Alison Corwin and Seth Corwin, and nieces.
His brother, Judge Benjamin Apkin, died March 20, 2012.
FUNERAL NOTICE â€' Funeral services for Mr. Apkin will take place Monday, March 10, at 1 p.m. from Congregation Beth Israel, 53 Lois St. Burial will follow in Beth Israel Cemetery in Clarksburg.
