Joseph F. Kus

Joseph F. Kus, 86, of 7 Fryc Lane died Monday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Northampton. Born in Cleveland on July 30, 1915, son of Frank and Julia Houska Kus, he attended schools there. He moved to Adams in 1945. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with Company C of the 48th battalion. He participated in the invasion of Italy in 1943 and his battalion played a major role in stopping the enemy forces. After four months of combat without rest, his battalion went to Rome to assist in operations there. The outfit later returned to Salerno, then invaded the South of France, eventually pushing into Germany and capturing Munich. His battalion spent a total of 605 days in combat. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1945 and was awarded five Bronze Star medals with a bronze arrowhead for his meritorious service. He was employed by General Electric Co. in the power transformer division for 18 years and retired in 1980. Previously, he had worked for the former Boston & Albany Railroad, the former Arnold Print Works and the former Brightwater Paper Co., all in Adams. Mr. Kus was a communicant of St. Stanislaus' Kostka Church and a member of the Adams Post 160 American Legion. He was an avid sports enthusiast. He leaves his wife of 55 years, the former Veronica J. Fryc, whom he married Nov. 10, 1945; two sons, Joseph F. Kus Jr. of Mesa, Ariz., and James J. Kus of Pittsfield; a daughter, Kathleen A. Lavigne of Enfield, Conn.; a sister, Sylvia Mendel of Adams, and three grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 9:15 from AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Stanislaus' Kostka Church. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus' Kostka Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 5 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Stanislaus' Church or School through the funeral home.
