Alfred F. Dougherty, 82

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Alfred Francis "Budd" Dougherty, 82, of 122 Notch Road died on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015, at his home and surrounded by his loving family.
Born in North Adams on Feb. 1, 1933, a son of James and Pearl Thompson Dougherty, he graduated in 1951 from Drury High School, where he was the captain of the football and baseball teams. He attended Springfield College for a yearl, and later obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from what was then North Adams State Teachers College.
A Navy veteran, he enlisted in 1952 and served as a hospital corpsman during the Korean War.
Mr. Dougherty was a longtime educator in the North Adams public schools. He was a dedicated and beloved teacher, guidance counselor, and special education coordinator in the city for 39 years. He also was a recipient of the Teacher of the Year award during this time.
He dedicated many years to the Democratic City Committee and multiple boards and commissions throughout the city including Northern Berkshire Mental Health (now the Brien Center). He was a daily communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, where he was an adorer and an alter server, and a member of Frank R. Stiles American Legion Post 125.
He also served on the city's Airport Commission for 31 years, many of them as chairman, and championed needed upgrades and modernization of Harriman & West Airport. In 2010, the road to the airport was renamed Budd Dougherty Drive in recognition of his efforts.
Mr. Dougherty also loved gardening, traveling and especially enjoyed seeing Ireland with his children. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, North Adams Steeplecats and Drury girls basketball teams.
His wife, the former Elizabeth Mahoney, died on Oct. 27, 2002.
He leaves his loving children, a daughter, Jane Marie Lamarre and her husband, David, of North Adams; two sons, Shaun Dougherty and his wife, Sheila, and Daniel J. Dougherty, all of North Adams; a sister-in-law, Bette Dougherty; nephews and nieces, Jeff Dougherty, J.Timothy Dougherty, Sharon Ward and Beth Dougherty, and many cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He also leaves his companion, Natalie Taylor and her family, with whom he enjoyed vacationing, and many close friends, including Melissa Grant-Fenty, who had a special place in his heart.
He was predeceased by a brother, James J. Dougherty, on Sept. 16, 2011.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A funeral to celebrate the life of Mr. Dougherty will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church.
Calling hours will be on Friday evening from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund-Dana Faber or the St. Vincent DePaul Society through the funeral home.
