Scott A. Toppin, 61

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Scott A. Toppin, 61, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died at his home on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, of brain cancer.

Born in North Adams on July 14, 1954, son of James Toppin of Apache Junction, Ariz., and the late Lois C. Parisien Toppin, he graduated from Waterloo (Iowa) West High School in 1972 and received his bachelor of science in engineering from Iowa State University in 1977.

Mr. Toppin was manager of tractor engineering for the John Deere Waterloo Works for 41 years.

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Waterloo; a recipient of the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver and Wood Badge Training. His three sons are Eagle Scouts.

He and his wife, the former Carol J. Sondgeroth, were married Aug. 12, 1978, at Holy Angels Church in Roselle, Iowa.

Besides his wife and his father, he leaves three sons, Paul Toppin and his wife, Kristen, and Curt Toppin and his wife, Chelsea, all of Cedar Falls, and Ryan Toppin and his wife, Bonnie, of Brooklyn Center, Minn.; two sisters, Melinda (Jim) Tinkey and her husband, James, of Jesup, Iowa, and Deb Pillar and her husband, Mark, of Ocala, Fla.; a brother, Michael Toppin of Ocala, Fla.; and two grandchildren Hadley Kay Toppin and Miles Scott Toppin, and another on the way.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A funeral Mass for Mr. Toppin was held Thursday, Dec. 3, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 650 Stephen Ave., Waterloo. Memorials are suggested to the Winnebago Council Boy Scouts of America, Cedar Valley Hospice or American Cancer Society. Locke Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
