Arnold R. Scaramuzzi, 86

LEE, Mass. — Arnold Raymond Scaramuzzi, 86, of Lee died Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at Fairview Hospital with his family by his side.

Arnold was born in Cheshire, Mass., on April 10, 1930, the son of Augusta and Marie Enes Bertelli Scaramuzzi. A life-long Lee resident, he was a member of the Lee High School graduating class of 1948. Arnold played baseball, basketball and football. He was a quarterback for three Western Massachusetts Championships and a member of the semi-pro Sons of Italy Wildcats Football team in 1949 and 1950, respectively.

Mr. Scaramuzzi served in the Army from 1951 until 1953 during the Korean War and also served in the Army Reserves until 1959. While serving with the Army, Mr. Scaramuzzi was a member of the Atomic Artillery outfit and was cleared for top-secret in atomic warfare.

Returning from the service, Arnold started his own building construction service and ran it until his retirement in 1992. During his 40 years in business, Mr. Scaramuzzi was responsible for several large jobs, including rebuilding High Lawn Farm after a devastating fire in 1957, restoring Clark-Aiken after a flood in 1967 and donating his time to build Our Lady’s Oratory at St. Mary’s Church and the Lee Chamber of Commerce Information Booth.

Additionally, Arnold supervised the construction of Berkshire Bank, built the present Greenock Country Club and the Lee Sportsman Club. He was also responsible for the development of Lynn Ann Drive, Debra Avenue and Theresa Terrace in the 1960s. Arnold also played a role in restoring a block on Main Street into 16 apartments and four stores.

Other accomplishments include the construction of Lee Cleaners, now Bucky’s Tavern, Garfield Townhouses, Edgewood Motel in Lenox, the former Fox Hollow School, and the rink on Housatonic Street in Lee.

He was a member of the Lee High Building Commission, Lee Planning Board, the Lee Kiwanis Club for 42 years and a two-time president and trustee of the Lee Sportsmen’s Club. He was also a former member of the Berkshire Bank Board of Directors and was the Lee High School House Building instructor from 1980 until 1988. Arnold also served as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Honorary Life Member Council 314 and Bishop Connery 4th Degree. He was also a member of the Chapter 15 Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by two daughters, Lynn Ann Wellington and her husband Gary and Debra Hall and her husband James, all of Lee; a sister-in-law, Ida Mae Scaramuzzi of Lee; three grandchildren, Christina Garner and her husband Dan of Pittsfield, Sean Wellington and his wife Devon of Braintree, and Nichol Mills and her husband Keala of Lee; and four great-grandchildren, Dylan and Anna Wellington of Braintree, Gretta Garner of Pittsfield and Logan Mills of Lee.

His beloved wife, the former Theresa M. Lorette, predeceased him 2013. He was also predeceased by his brother, Louis.

Funeral notice: Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at 10 a.m. with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Vincent De Paul Church in Lenox Dale with the Rev. Gary M. Dailey, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lee. At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Arnold’s memory to the Lee Sportsmen’s Club in care of the Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.

Lynn & family, so sorry for the loss of your loved one. I didn't know him personally, but he made some unbelievable achievements in his life from what i read. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. My prayers and thoughts are with you all.
